Dearest Family,

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MARY ANN - 22 YEARS OLD TODAY!!!  I believe your family was going to "go out" for dinner and I hope you have had a VERY happy day.  Mary Ann & David have sold their condo and are busy with school and EVERYTHING else a young couple is busy with - I believe they are living with Davids' parents in Draper.

Bob just left from his "Sunday Visit" and I got some news about their family.  DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL BEAT NORTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL IN FOOTBALL LAST NIGHT!!!  Bob said that was a real upset and ESPN was there to film the game because Northridge had not been beaten all year and they were considered an outstanding High School team.  I'm thrilled for Davis High - Northridge has been a rival for them for many years.  I believe the score was something like 41-14 - WOW!!!  Bob said Katie and all the other cheerleaders cheered their hearts out.  Laura moved into an apartment in Salt Lake yesterday with a friend from Layton who is a school teacher - Laura is working as an accountant with "Orbit", the landscaping company.  Brett and his friend girl went to Logan yesterday to visit with Michael & Staci.   Brett's friend has spent alot of time in Thailand where her Father is an international lawyer - I would like to meet her and hear some news from Bangkok.  Bob and Claire are doing fine - I remember the days when our older children started moving out of our home and that is a REAL adjustment!!!

Jeannie & Rick spent the night with me last night - I didn't get to see much of them because I was gone when they came and they left VERY early this morning.  They had their hardwood floors re-finished and the fumes were so strong they worried that they may get sick if they spent much time in their home - I WAS THRILLED TO HAVE THEM HERE!!!  Jeannie came to get me one day last week and took me to see Barji & Boyds' new home - it is lovely and I thought after I had seen it that every home with little children should have a "gym".  I have never seen a "gym" in a home before - it is a large room with cork and carpet on the walls to control the noise and also let the children throw balls on it, etc.  It also has an outside entrance so the children can come and go without going through their home.  Their home is almost finished and they will probably be able to move in soon.  I was surprised to learn that Sarah is doing her student teaching in the school close to where Preston & Gracie will live.  I didn't even know she was in the educational field.  She is also learning "sign language".  Ricky is doing fine and likes living in Salt Lake.

Annie - I appreciate SO VERY MUCH your letting me know about the death of Morris Clark - he was 88 years old.  I would never have known about it because his obituary was not in my papers.  Cheryl wouldn't have known about it either.  I met Cheryl in Murray on Friday morning and then she drove to Lehi and we went to his funeral.  THAT WAS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE.  Morris' first wife died in 1977 and he married a lady whose name was Donna in 1978 so they have been married 26 years.  When we were in the line for Morris' viewing we asked a lady where Donna was and we found out she had become VERY upset about something and was not even there - we couldn't believe it!!!  She was not mentioned in the talks that were given but many nice things were said about his first wife.  Morris & his first wife had two children - a girl and a boy and they are in their sixties I think.  Morris has leased Aunt Marvel's property for many, many years and he has leased ours for the last ten years or more.  I don't know what will happen now - he has been leasing the five acres and the West canyon land and he has been leasing all of Don & Cheryls.  Donna finally came in to the back of the chapel for the funeral and I went to visit with her - I told her that John would be talking to her in a couple weeks.  You would have to be MIGHTY angry to miss your husband's funeral!!!

John - thanks for your phone calls.  He is doing fine and Cheryl wanted to see his home so we drove by it after the funeral.  He surely has some beautiful roses in his front yard - I am very jealous because I cannot grow roses!!!  John has been traveling and has gone to Arizona and California lately.

I had an alarming message on my telephone answering machine last night when I came home.  Carol Ann had left a message saying that her brother Jim had been diagnosed with colon cancer and had undergone serious surgery and had been in the Mt. Pleasant hospital for several weeks.  He was getting ready to go home when he suffered a massive heart attack and they had flown him to the Utah Valley Hospital in Provo where they were worried that he had gone too long without oxygen.  Carol Ann asked me to telephone Carol and gave me her phone number.  I called Carol early this morning and she said Jim was doing much better and they expected to release him tomorrow to go home to Manti.  Jim is between Bob & Jean in age so he is probably about 48 years old.  I will keep in touch with Carol Ann & Carol and keep you informed.  He is the pharmacist in Sanpete County now - he used to own the pharmacy that Elliott & Carol owned but he sold that and now spends most of his time in Mt. Pleasant, I think!!!

I went to Star Valley with Margaret last Monday and we came home on Wednesday.  It was a good place for me to hide with my swollen eyes and we had a good time.  She had to go there to register her new car - all her cars and homes are registered in Wyoming because of tax benefits - I don't understand all that!!!   It was beautiful there - Fall leaves are so pretty at this time of year.

I had the stitches taken from my eyes on Thursday morning and Dr. Washburn says they are healing good.  He has done such a good job and has been very nice and Bob has been such alot of help too giving me special ointment.  My face & eyes are still swollen and I guess they will be that way for a couple more weeks.  It is surprising how much better I can see and I am thrilled!!!

I went to Utah State's Homecoming yesterday with Margaret.  We went to the Alpha Chi Sorority house and it was fun to meet some of the girls and it brought back a million memories.  Margaret has a granddaughter and a future grandaughter-in-law who live in the house and it's fun to tell them about the "good ole days" when we didn't have the beautiful home they have to live in.  I was President of the sorority and my Father and I spent an entire Summer in Logan trying to restore a very old home to be used as a Sorority house.  It was during the war and we appreciated every single thing we could have - the girls living in the house now are very concerned because their sofas are old - Ha!!!!  Utah State lost their football game and they should have won it - they made two fumbles that cost them the game - they played North Texas and the score was 31-23.

I went to the temple this morning for a training session - Bob went this afternoon for the same thing.  We have to go twice a year and it's a wonderful refreshment course.  They are planning to build another temple in Salt Lake County soon and that really surprises me because the Bountiful temple isn't busy enough I don't think.  I heard the Jordan River Temple is just packed all the time and the speculation is that the next temple will be built in Draper.

WHAT ABOUT THE POLITICS!!!  I have enjoyed watching the debates and I keep wondering how the candidates can be friends again after all the mean things they say about each other.  It is interesting to watch the Utah Governor's race - Huntsman has the edge according to the polls I think.  And then there is Nancy Workman - she has surely done some dumb things I think.

I'm SO happy they have found Lori Hacking's body.  That has to be the saddest thing I have ever heard about.  I wish they could find Garrett Bardsley's body - that has to be the hardest thing for parents I have ever heard about.

That's all the news - I think.  I LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH.  PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.  Grandma B XXXXXOOOOO
