Weekly Report October 19, 2003

Dearest Family,

THIS IS HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK FOR SOME OF THOSE IN THE MELLOR FAMILY.  HAPPY, HAPPY, BIRTHDAY TO TIMOTHY WHO WILL TURN INTO A TEENAGER ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23RD - I KNOW HE WILL BE A DELIGHTFUL TEENAGER FOLLOWING RIGHT IN EMILY'S FOOTSTEPS.  HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SUSANNA WHO WILL BE 25 YEARS OLD AND A VERY SWEET AND WONDERFUL MOTHER OF LITTLE JACKSON.  HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ROY AND PATRICE ON SATURDAY WHO ARE "THIRTY SOMETHING".  THEY ARE SO LUCKY TO BE ABLE TO CELEBRATE THEIR BIRTHDAYS TOGETHER AND I KNOW THEY WILL DO SOMETHING SPECIAL!!!

This has been a special week for me - I have heard from each one of you.  Patrice - thank you for your family update:  Emily spent last Sunday at the library studying with her group for a test in World History and Timothy was there doing some research for one of his classes before he played in his soccer game.  Roy took Jesse and his friend, Gordy, to the Arkansas State Fair and can you believe it - he let them ride the huge bungee cord ride!!!  Congratulations to Jesse for being elected as Treasurer in the Student Council at Forest Park School - I'm proud of you Jesse for winning over some 5th graders.

John - thank you for your WONDERFUL picture of our property in West Canyon.  John said he "dragged" Laura to go with him and they rode horses so they could get to the 40 acres where he took LOTS of pictures and it is beautiful up there - he said the elevation registered 6,802.  Sometime I hope they will make it to the 80 acres.  I used to think it would be fun to take a tent and spend the night there but I'm too old for that now and it might be scary - what kind of animals would be there?

Annie - thank you for your message.  I hope you will be able to relax a little when your class gets over (she said it was LOTS of work to cram into 9 weeks).  That is completely beyond me and I'm VERY proud of you!!!  I hope Jessie's "tune-up eye surgery" goes well - it's wonderful that she is doing so well and has found such a good doctor to help her.

Bob & Claire - I'm SO sorry I missed your visit tonight - you came earlier than usual.  Last week Bob came about 10 p.m. and tonight they came about 7 p.m.  You were right - I had made some goodies and my kitchen was a MESS!!!  Jeannie & Rick invited me for dinner and I hurried to make some divinity and I had saved some for you and I would bring it to you but I put too many nuts in it and it isn't very good.  I appreciate SO much all you have done for me this week.  They took me and Alice & Bob Ezell to Provo on Tuesday night where we attended the State Band competitions - we went to the "Crab Snack" for dinner first and that was so much fun.  I would have awarded Davis High Band first place - they are SO good.  American Fork Band won again this year and they are good too.  The Bob Mellors went to Zion Park this weekend for the U.E.A. holiday and I LOVED the pictures Claire sent to me on the internet this morning.  They did some high class hiking and some of the pictures were of rock climbers which scare me but I know they are too smart to do that.  "Angel's Landing" is a popular place to hike and there is a 1500 ft. fall if you lose your balance!!!  Katie had her little friend, Abby Tingey, with them and they have fun together.

Jeannie and Rick - I LOVED being with you tonight for a delicious dinner with your WONDERFUL family!!!  Barji, Boyd & Preston were there with their motor home and I took LOTS of pictures and if they're good I'll scan them for you.  I'm proud of them for being so adventurous and capable to own a home like that - it is very beautiful and PERFECT for them.  It was fun to have Boyd explain all the things to me - there is ALOT of storage space on the outside of the motor home and he understands EVERYTHING.  I guess that means alot to me because we had things we couldn't understand on our little trailer many years ago.  Mary Ann & David were there too and David says he enjoys his work because "the harder you work, the more money you earn" - what a GREAT thing to learn early in your lives and be willing to apply it.  Mary Ann is greatly loved in her nursing program and took some "pink" goodies to a ninety year old woman today for her birthday - she was born with a generous supply of thoughtfulness!!!  Sarah was there also and her friend, Brant came to visit for a little while - he will be going into the MTC to train for his mission to Madagascar in January.
Ricky was home for a couple days this weekend but went home on Saturday.

Jeannie, Peg Steed (Margaret's daughter) and I went to the Rock Loft yesterday to attend an art "showing and video" presented by James Christensen and it was REALLY good.  I LOVE his work and it was fun to have him explain his paintings - they're more meaningful when he explains them.  He and his daughter had just returned from a showing in Connecticut - she is also an artist.  Jean & Peg had planned this to celebrate Margaret's birthday but she decided to go to Star Valley to be with one of her sons.

One of Bob's patients gave him some "purple hulled peas" last week.  Do any of you remember having them when we lived in Arkansas?  They are only grown in the South and I love them but you can't find them here, even frozen ones.  Claire cooked them with some ham and they brought me a bowl - it was really a taste of Little Rock (I put some tabisco sauce in them).

I did alot of D.U.P. work last week - I wish you could all see the women in my camp.  They are mostly in their 80's and quite feeble and I'm scared to death that one of them is going to fall.  We met in the home of a woman who will be 89 next week and she is amazing - she makes delicious pumpkin pies and all kinds of candies.  They live in the same home they have lived in for 60 years and she says it is very sacred to them because three of their babies who died of cholera are buried in their coffins on their property.  That is illegal now but I guess it wasn't 50 years ago.  This woman's husband was out raking leaves when we were leaving and he was holding a cane to steady himself with his left hand and raking leaves with his right hand - reminded me of Lynn when he was working so hard on the cabin when he was SO sick!!!

I went to a D.U.P. luncheon on Thursday at the Company President's home - it was lovely and when I told her I wanted this year to be the last I serve as Captain she said "Who do you think could take your place"?  I couldn't think of anyone because of their ages and the two young ones who belong couldn't do it because they are on the International Board.  I am SO proud that we have such good attendance and they all enjoy it SO much - we had 17 there last week.

Susanna - THANK you SO much for the pictures you sent me of Jackson & Preston - I'm VERY impressed that you can do that and I LOVE them. I hope your weather is cooling off some - we are having absolutely gorgeous weather.

That's all the news.  I LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH.  PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.  Grandma B XXXXXOOOOO
