Dearest Family,
I will start my lesson tonight with a VERY
sad message I had on my answering machine today. Carol Ann called to
tell me that Art has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - she could
hardly talk and I am SO sorry!!! I believe Art is in his 60's isn't
he? I will call her later but after my experience with Kevin Sondrup it
will be difficult to know what to say.
I went to the Utah Classic golf tournament
this morning with Jeannie & Rick - WHAT A FUN TREAT FOR ME!!! I have
never gone to a golf tournament before and I just LOVED it!!! Boyd's
t-time was about 9 a.m. so we left the Weinert's home at 8:15 - the
weather couldn't have been better and the Willow Creek golf course in
Salt Lake is absolutely gorgeous with the beautiful mountains in the
background and of course the greens are manicured. I served "Stephen's
Hot Chocolate" at the Park Meadows Golf course in Park City a few years
ago but this time I walked all along the 18 holes and I learned alot
about golf. Boyd did very well but Barji said he didn't do well enough
to "make the cut" to go on to Oregon - Rick said his score was 69 and it
was fun to see young boys lined up to get his autograph. Boyd, Barji
and Preston are leaving in the morning to go to Boise, Idaho where Boyd
will play in the Idaho Open and they will be gone for about two weeks.
Mary Ann took care of Preston this morning at her condo and David came
to be with us. I came home and took a little nap - I didn't make church
today which is unusual for me.
I have just had TOO MUCH FUN LATELY!!! I
went to Park City with Margaret last Sunday and we went to all the
LaborDay (Miner's Day in Park City) festivities the next morning - the
parade was so much fun to watch on Main Street in Park City and then we
went to the park where we had a "Rotarian Picnic" and it was good -
hamburgers, chips and drinks. THEN Margaret and I went to the Park City
Home Tour - the other two couples who were with us came back home and
they missed ALOT. I just couldn't believe the homes we saw - we had to
travel by shuttle for about 6 miles up in the Canyons' Area and this
home is nestled in among the pines and aspen trees. The couple who own
it greeted us and they are from Kentucky and they said they wanted to
get away from the heat and humidity. We saw about five homes total and
each one was just spectacular but the most spectacular one was in Deer
Valley where the home had a panoramic view of the Jordanelle Reservoir -
it was on the market for $9.595,000.00. It was huge and it had a "mud
room" where the skiers would ski right down to the door to take their
things off - WOW!!!
I had a WONDERFUL visit with my "old" High
School friends at Mel & Emma Lou Thaynes' Summer home in Parley's Canyon
on Wednesday night. They have this lovely old family home that is SO
comfortable and they cooked steaks and potatoes and then the rest of us
took food to add to that. The following friends were there: Merlin &
Roberta Larsen, Mel & Ellen Mae, Malcolm & Marian Jeppson, and Clinton
& Eris Holmes and I went with Mel & Ellen Mae. Emma Lou is working on a
new book that we're all anxious to read.
I went to my "60th High School Reunion" in
Brigham City on Thursday night and it couldn't have been better!!! They
served about 100 people a delicious dinner at "The Lodge" which is next
to the Maddox Restaurant and then we had a program put on by a trio
which sang songs from "the 40's" and they were excellent. My former
friend during my High School days played some songs on the piano and he
is REALLY good - Arthur Murphy who lives in Fort Worth. We had a group
picture taken and I hope I don't look as hot as I felt - I dressed in a
long sleeved jacket and I know it must have been 100 degrees outside
where the picture was taken. September is supposed to be Fall weather
but it hasn't arrived yet. I am saddened at the deterioration of the
health of many of my classmates - some are blind, many are using walkers
or they're in wheelchairs and another friend, Del Holmgren, has had mini
strokes and has a difficult time speaking. Margaret is the same age as
my twin brothers and they had their 55th reunion on Friday night - she
told me that my brother Don didn't come and that makes me VERY sad. He
is not doing very well.
Saturday I decided I would regret it if I
didn't go to Brigham City for the 100th anniversary of Peach Days so
about 5 p.m. I drove there - parked my car close to Main Street and
walked up and down and went to the concession stand and bought a
hamburger and then came back home. They had many pictures of Brigham
City families in the windows of some of the businesses and there was a
good one of Dee, Judy and four of their children - it made my trip there
worthwhile!!! They had a gathering of all the Peach Queens they could
find from the past 100 years on Thursday night and I thought maybe there
would be a picture of them but there wasn't. I was an attendant to the
War Bond Queen and I wondered how they would handle that but I guess I
have put more emphasis on that than anyone else.
Bob - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR VISIT and
CLAIRE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING ME UP TO DATE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
Bob came over on Friday afternoon and we had such a good visit and he
fixed my kitchen window which I have had a hard time getting to close.
They have been in Sun Valley for a few days and I had to laugh at what
Claire said, "I Believe Bob is Trying to Kill Me Off" - Ha!!! They went
on a very long hike but they said it was beautiful and fun. Claire - I
LOVE the pictures of the remodeling taking place at Davis High and they
make me "kinda" understand what is going on in there when I pass it. It
is going to be just gorgeous when it is finished.
Jessie - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR
WONDERFUL LETTER!!! I LOVE to hear about all the things you are
involved in and I'm SO proud of all you are accomplishing. Jessie is
teaching an English Writing Class at San Diego State University and also
working in her classes to prepare to write her Master's Thesis - THAT'S
A BIG UNDERTAKING!!! She's also working in her Relief Society
Auxilliary in her ward. I'm SO glad you could come home during the
Labor Day Holiday and I wish I could have seen you in Deer Valley while
you were there with your High School friend. Your hike with your family
to Mt. Timpanogas sounded mighty fun and mighty healthy - I know I
couldn't do that!!!
Annie - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR MESSAGE -
you sound very busy but happy and of course that makes me happy. I'm SO
glad you and Ron could go to Phoenix to see Susanna & Steve - I know it
makes you feel better when you can see them settled in their darling
apartment and doing good. I'm proud of all you do too - teaching your
classes at BYU and I hope you will come to Bountiful soon to see your
student and will have time to come by Farmington for a little visit. I
hope Grandpa Russ will be contented soon - he's at a difficult age but
he has good health and MANY friends to support him.
John - I was disappointed that I missed you
yesterday. John and Laura went to a horse show in Ogden where I believe
Laura bought a new horse and they stopped by here so John could pick up
his mail. I walk by a "horseback riding" stable every morning when I am
at Margaret's home in Star Valley and I always think about Laura because
the woman who owns this and teaches the riding lessons loves her horses
and takes such good care of them. This woman's husband works at UPS so
they can afford the riding stable - Ha!!! John taught me how to cook
small filets of salmon and I am addicted to them. I buy individual
salmon filet steaks that have never been frozen, sprinkle "Mrs. Dash"
seasoning on them and cook them in the micro-wave for 3 minutes. I buy
them at Dick's Market in Centerville and they cost about $2.50 each. I
told Jeannie I didn't cover them but today I had a cleaning job in my
micro-wave so I guess it is best to cover them lightly with wax paper.
TRY IT!!!
I know the Roy Mellors are doing good - I'm
betting that soccer is in "full swing" now and I believe both Timothy &
Jesse are both involved in that. Emily - how is High School coming? I
know you have found that it is very different from Middle School but
then you were there last year so you are all adjusted even though
Central is a very large school.
That's all the news - I think. I LOVE EACH
ONE OF YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN
EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B XXXXXOOOOO
