Weekly Report October 20, 2002

Dearest Family,

This next week is "Birthday Week" in our family!!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TIMOTHY ON WEDNESDAY AND HE WILL BE 12 YEARS OLD.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SUSANNA ON THURSDAY AND SHE WILL BE TWICE AS OLD AS TIMOTHY - HA!!!  HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ROY AND PATRICE ON FRIDAY AND THEY WILL BE "THIRTY SOMETHING"!!!  I HOPE YOU WILL EACH HAVE VERY SPECIAL DAYS - I'M PROUD OF ALL OF YOU!!!

We celebrated some birthdays in the condos last week - six of us went to the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and then to a Mexican restaurant for dinner.  That is the second time I have seen that movie and that is VERY unusual for a person who NEVER goes to movies  - BUT I think that is such a cute movie and it was fun.

It is "Election Time" and as I see so many signs in yards around town I think about Annie and her campaign.  This is really the first time I have been very interested in elections so it is fun for me - win or lose Ann!!!  It's difficult for me to understand why anyone would put alot of effort, money and worry into a campaign that requires a great deal of work and very little compensation, if any.  I am also interested in many of the gubernatorial races and some Utah congressional races.

Russell - how are your English lessons coming?  I really should send you some letters I receive from my Thai friends who studied with us.  I cherish their letters because I know exactly what they are trying to say but they say it in a different way.  I look forward to your Mom sending us parts of your letters so we can hear about your success.  The Thai language is a "tonal" one and if you use the wrong tones to some words it gives them an entirely different meaning - is it that way with the Malagasy language?

I was SO thrilled to go to the Davis High football game on Friday night.  I don't go until it is about halftime and I never want to sit in the bleachers because it is SO crowded so I just stand next to the stadium.  The Davis High Band performed and Brett's drum line ended up right in front of where I was standing - I could almost touch them.  That band is SO VERY GOOD and it is very special for me to see Brett as part of the drum line that really sets the tempo for it.  It is also very special for me to see Sarah as a cheerleader.  She was right in the middle of the cheerleaders so I wasn't as close to her as I have been before - I waved to her but I'm not sure she saw me.  The games are really for the young people and they look at me as if to say "what are you doing here"?  I leave right after halfttime so I avoid the crowd - Davis lost to Northridge by 42 points.

Patrice - thank you SO much for those wonderful pictures of Emily, Timothy and Jesse.  I hope you don't mind but I forwarded them to my Utah family and Ann's response was "Gosh, Emily is gorgeous"!!!  It is so fun for me to see Emily and Timothy dressed up for Cotillion and it brings back very special memories - the fair picture of Roy with Jesse and his friend also brings back fun memories.  Roy looks like a little kid and Jesse's smile is worth a million dollars!!!  I hope you will send me a picture with you in it next time.  There is a cute couple who have just moved into our ward from Little Rock - he just graduated from law school there and they have bought one of those homes East of the condos.  I met her today and she says she REALLY misses Little Rock - I will go visit her and we can "miss it together" - Ha!!!

Jeannie - thank you SO much for your long letter.  I am SO grateful for computers and the internet so I can keep up with my family and I appreciate more than I can say how much I love to receive "updates" from each of you.  I said in my letter last week that the entire Weinert family went to Nauvoo - I WAS WRONG.  Ricky, Barji and Boyd were unable to go.  Jeannie said they had a GREAT time and she, Rick and David were able to attend a session in the new temple there and Mary Ann and Sarah did baptisms.  They said it was beautiful and very different from the time we visited there many years ago as a family - do any of you remember going there?  I didn't like it at that time so I need to go back.  My friend, Helen Jane Lemon, has put her papers in to go on a mission and she says if she isn't sent to Nauvoo she isn't going - Ha!!!  I know that every minute will count in the Weinert family between now and when Mary Ann and David are married - their plans sound SO exciting!!!

I haven't heard from John since the Montana Missionary Reunion - he said at that time that he was VERY busy and that is good!!!  I look out my window here and the trees in the condos are just golden and the ones up on the mountains are all different colors.  I hope John and Laura are taking lots of automobile trips when they can to enjoy the beautiful Fall colors - I don't remember when the Utah mountains have been prettier.

I was also wrong when I said the entire Woolley family went to San Diego during UEA vacation.  Annie said that Ron and Jimmy went and took their wet suits so they could do some surfing - I am assuming that Lee Anna went also.  I know Jessie was thrilled to see them and I want to hear how she is doing.

Bob and Claire are SO good to drop in when they can.  I am always SO happy when I have people tell me about Dr. Mellor and how he has helped them with different surgeries and this week has been special.  Two people with whom I work at the temple have talked about this great doctor without even knowing he is my son.  Claire gave a wedding shower this past week for a young woman - she is a daughter of one of Claire's good friends who was critically injured in an automobile accident a few years ago and is confined to a wheelchair.  I also heard about the success of this shower.

I have been "up to my ears" with DUP this week - Ha!!!  We had our monthly meeting on Wednesday and since the member who was supposed to have it had a "quilt on" in her living room she had it at the home of one of her sons.  Her last name is Leonard and that is a very prominent name in Davis County and there is a "Leonard Lane" where some of her children have built homes.  It was fun to go to this home and it is in an area where I could see the Weinert home at a distance except there were too many trees in the way.  Jeannie is a good friend of the wife of this Leonard family.  I went to a DUP luncheon on Thursday after going visiting teaching.
I made your pumpkin cookies Annie to take to the sisters for a Halloween treat.

My neighbor, Margaret, has an older sister who was a close friend of my sister, Lela.  She and her husband are here this weekend from Chicago to attend a family funeral and it has been fun to visit with her.  Margaret went to Phoenix yesterday to attend a family funeral too.  I guess it is our ages - Ha!!!

I must mention the "Washington Sniper" for my "journal".  I have my own ideas about who I think it is but they differ from most everyone elses - I think he is connected to the Al  Quida terrorists.  I just hope they catch him soon - it's unbelievable that he can elude SO many professionals who are searching for him.  We are living in perilous times and IT IS NOT MY AGE!!!

That's all the news.  I STILL HAVE LOTS OF ICE CREAM - (left over from the Missionary reunion) - so if you get hungrey for ice cream come visit before I give it away which should be soon.  I wish I could send it to Russell - ice cream was almost unavailable in Thailand.

I LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH.  PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.  Grandma B XXXXXXXXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOO
