Dearest Family,
Where were you on September 11, 2 001???? How
many times have we heard that on television during the last couple days? I
listened to Larry King Live last night and he had many celebrities on his
program answering that question and it was interesting but I'm not sure I am
going to watch television much this next week. I will NEVER forget where I
was and I'm sure John won't either - I think they should interview him for
our local newspaper because his account is more interesting than most of the
ones I read about and I still enjoy reading the paper he wrote about his
experiences that day. John is very fortunate to have had the opportunity to
live in New York during the most historic time of our century. I think
about Michael having the opportunity now to see some of the television
coverage he missed while in Italy and about Russell who will have to wait
until he gets home to see it replayed - he may be able to see some of it in
Madagascar but I doubt it.
Patrice - Thank you SO much for your Labor Day
letter!!! Your church potluck dinner at Maumelle Park sounded like a
wonderful time - I remember when you sent me pictures of your dinner last
year with Roy eating some goat meat he had cooked. The pig and the lamb
sound more appetizing to me and I hope it all turned out good. I can
understand why Jesse would be happy to be the only one at Forest Park School
this year - he has had to share the spotlight with Emily and Timothy for
long enough. I just LOVE that school and I'm SO glad I have been able to
attend so many activities there. I'm happy Emily isn't overwhelmed with the
HUGE studentbody at Central - at least compared to her other schools - she
will do GREAT!!! Timothy is taking a computer class before school - isn't
it wonderful that is offered? I hope Emily finds her orchestra to be
challenging because she is GOOD!!!
Annie - we're all supporting you in your
campaign for election to the school board in the Provo School District - at
least in our hearts and I wish we could vote. I'm SO proud of you to take
on something like that and even if you don't win it will give you the
opportunity to learn ALOT!!! I remember when my Father ran for Box Elder
County "Something" (I can't remember the position) and he lost and I thought
my Mother was going to have a stroke - she took it much too personally. How
many are running? It's great that Susanna, Steve and Jackson can spend some
time with you and I know it must be fun to hear the baby cry in the night
and know that you don't have to get up with him - Ha!!! I got the quilt I
had ordered for him and since it is turning cooler he might be able to use
it - it's just like the one I got for Preston. Ron - your ice cream socials
sound WONDERFUL to me and having the BYU Ice Cream so available that's the
only way to go. We used to have alot of banana splits for our missionaries
when we lived in Orem.
Boyd - I was SO proud to see the headlines in
our paper "Summerhays Leads Utah Classic" and I was especially happy to read
the quote from you that you don't want to put alot of pressure on yourself
to win but just to play your best. Utah has had LOUSY weather for the
tournament - it has rained and rained and the golfers have just had to wait
it out. I don't believe Boyd did as well last night in the little bit of
time he got to play and I haven't heard today how he is doing. John said,
"Wow, what alot of stress to do that for your livelihood" but Jeannie says
that Boyd loves it and that's what is important. The Weinerts had a fun
family golf game last Monday with Rick & Ricky; Mary Ann & David; and Sarah
& Jeannie - Jeannie said they laughed and laughed!!!
Bob - thank you for your report on your Lake
Powell trip. It's hard for me to believe that the water is much lower there
than it has ever been - we are really in a drought. I'm glad you got to
stay at Ticaboo Lodge and enjoyed it - I have always wondered what kind of a
place that was. The experience you had with your "unruly lake neighbors"
was really something!!! It's good to learn that the rangers would help like
that. I enjoyed reading Ron's answers to your questions about operating the
boat - that all sounds like Greek to me but I'm glad you all understand it.
I appreciate the pictures Claire sends me through the week - it's kind of a
struggle for me to see baby pictures of my grandchildren and realize they're
not babies any more!!!
John - I LOVED having you "drop in" one morning
last week. Your work sounds like it is going good - challenging but good.
You would be an excellent educator because you take a personal interest in
everyone. I hope you continue to be in such great physical condition as you
are now.
I was happy to have Rick, Jeannie and Ricky come
over to visit last Sunday night and to have Bob & Claire come right after
they got home from Lake Powell on Monday. I haven't seen Ricky for a long,
long time so it was good to be with him again and he is SO happy in Logan
and with his school tutoring job - great experience for him!!!
I have had a fun and busy week. I had a D.U.P.
planning luncheon on Thursday for the leaders in my "camp". I served
chicken salad in a cantaloupe ring and it was good but afterwards I thought
it would have been prettier to have served it on a lettuce leaf. I don't
entertain enough to remember things like that. I had to get things ready
for our first meeting - it will be two days after I get home from
California. I am going to meet Chris in Salt Lake on Thursday and we will
be on the same flight to go to California - John arranged my ticket for me
and it worked out so nicely. We will stay with Dianne from Thursday until
Monday and then Chris will stay with me when we get home for a day or so
before going to Idaho to visit her sisters. I'm looking forward to seeing
Dianne and Garrys' home - they are also building a condo in Cottonwood in
Salt Lake.
Do any of you remember Lillie and Lavar Goulding
and their sons, Jerry and Mike? I know that Ann and Jean do but I'm not
sure about the rest of you. Lillie is Lynn's cousin and we were friends in
Phoenix. ANYWAY - Lillie and Lavar divorced and Lillie re-married and she
now lives in Salt Lake. Margaret gives me her Star Valley, Wyoming
newspapers to read and one day last week I noticed a young man who looked
very familiar to me whose wedding picture was in the paper. He was Jerry
Goulding's son and he looks just like Jerry as I remember him - Jerry is
Ann's age and they have remained friends all these years. I called Lillie
in Salt Lake just to say hello and found that she is recuperating from colon
cancer but she told me that Jerry and his wife and family have lived in
Afton, Wyoming all their married lives. I was SO surprised because I spend
alot of time there when I go to Star Valley with Margaret - I'll call him
when I go next time. Lillie told me about her family and that was fun -
Jerry and Mike are both attorneys. Mike is divorced after 20 years and four
children but he has remarried and is doing fine and they live in
California. Jerry's wife is a counselor in the High School in Afton - he
has just been released from serving as Bishop for five years. He has done
some legal work for Margaret - his Father-in-law is also an attorney and I
believe they work together. WHAT A SMALL WORLD!!!
I am enjoying the Fall football season and I
LOVE to go to the Davis High School games and see Brett in the band and
Sarah as a cheerleader. Jeannie called me on Friday to tell me about the
game but she said they weren't going to go until close to half-time because
it was raining on and off. I like to go by myself so I can leave early
before the traffic - I like to go to bed early on Friday night. WELL - I
got there towards the end of the 2nd quarter but I couldn't find Jean and
Rick anywhere. I do believe everyone in Davis County goes to those games
and they bring the WHOLE family - Ha!!! I saw Brett playing his drums and I
saw Sarah and I asked her if she knew where her folks were - she hadn't seen
them. I stayed for a little while but it was SO crowded I couldn't see the
game so I left - they won by about three touchdowns - they have a good
team. I got the end of the BYU/Hawaii game on television and I was thrilled
that BYU won - they also have a good team.
Russell - keep up your GREAT work. I'm thrilled
that you are back in Madagascar and I'm anxious to hear how you are doing.
I won't write my letter next week until the
middle of the week. I LOVE EACH ONE OF YOU SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE
SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B
