Weekly Report December 3, 2000
Dearest Family,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ANNIE TODAY!!! I would like
to have baked you a birthday cake and invited the family for dinner but I know
how very busy you all are at this season of the year. I actually did
consider fixing Thai soup and salad and inviting everyone but I am worried my
grandchildren wouldn't like the soup and besides the First Presidency is giving
their Christmas message tonight on television. I know your family and I
know you have had a birthday cake and a very happy celebration - you deserve it
at your age - Ha!!!
The Bob Mellors are home safe and sound. I'm
anxious to see their pictures but Bob is SO busy in his work and also his church
calling - I can wait until they get rested up. I went to see them tonight
but Bob was in church meetings - their home is all decorated and is so pretty.
They had had a dinner party last night for the High Priest Group in their
ward -they served bar-b-cue ribs. John Mellor is lost - I think he is
still in Atlanta but I haven't heard from him - I hope this isn't the way it is
going to be now that he has changed jobs. I'm sure he is VERY busy too
getting into his new job - when I think of the adjustment he is making I can't
help but admire him for being so "gutsy". I believe he goes to
Israel sometime next week. I want to help him finish up clearing out his
home when he has time. The Roy Mellors are doing fine and I can just
imagine the excitement that is in their home - I am wondering what Timothy and
Jesse are asking Santa Clause for. I hope they don't want those
"scooters" that are so popular now - I think they would be dangerous
in their area. Roy at their ages wanted a microscope and that machine that
made plastic creatures and he would spend hours in our little kitchen area
downstairs in Little Rock using those things - WONDERFUL memories!!!
The Weinerts are doing fine too - I went to see them
tonight and their Christmas lights are SO pretty. Jeannie had made
"cashew brittle" and her famous potato rolls. I was VERY
impressed with how they ended their fast with a prayer before Mary Ann and Sarah
could eat. I am learning from my family how to do things I should have
known a long time ago!!!
I have had a fun week. I went to the Olive
Gardens with my condo group last Monday night to celebrate one of their
birthdays - I had eggplant parmesiagnne (sp.?) and it was delicious. Tuesday
night I went to the "Festival of Trees" with Margaret and other condo
friends - she gets special invitations because of her contributions in previous
years for the "pre-sale" and since I haven't been there for about ten
or more years I really loved it. There were over 600 decorated trees and
many, many wreaths and other decorations - it was fabulous. That event has
earned millions for the Primary Children's Hospital through the years. Margaret
used to own a Bassett Hound and it died about two months after her husband died
and she misses it so much. There was a tree decorated with Bassett Hound
dogs so she bought it - they will deliver it tomorrow and I'm anxious to see how
it fits in her condo. I ran into some of my former neighbors in Orem and I
couldn't even remember their names - that worries me!!! She couldn't
believe it when I had to ask her what her name was. She hadn't heard about
John's move but she was sad to learn he is moving.
I had a funny experience at the temple on Saturday.
I had told a sister I would work for her after my shift since she had
substituted for me during the Summer. I waited all week for the supervisor
to call me because they always do that - well, when I went to find her when my
shift ended she looked at me and then looked at my name tag and started to
laugh. She had been told a "Barbara Miller" was going to
substitute and since she knew this sister she called her and gave her the
instructions for that shift. SO I got to come home about noon instead of 4
p.m. and I was happy!!!
The condo area is decorated just beautifully and I
LOVE it. They have put those tiny white lights all around the swimming
pool fence and then most of the condos have the lights on their roofs. I
also have decorated that big pine tree in my front yard and I just love to look
out the windows and see everything. The only bad thing is that when
January comes things look SO drab.
I had a sweet letter from Chris and Wayne. I
hadn't heard from them for a long time and I was worried that they were upset
because we are selling the cabin but they aren't. Chris said going there
just isn't the same without Lynn - he and Wayne just loved everything about
Scofield. She said that Wayne is doing more remodeling on their home in
Alabama. They still spend a lot of time in Arkansas (Plainview) with
Wayne's mother who is in her nineties. Rick and his family are very happy
in Florida and Linda and Ken are still in Texas and their daughters are very
successful in college and work.
Michael - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR POSTCARD FROM VENICE - I LOVED IT!!! My
home teacher travels all over the world working in some kind of "coal
business" and he told me this morning that he leaves for Italy in the
morning. I said "Oh my grandson is serving a mission there" - he
asked me what part and I said "Pardova" - is that right? He said
he wouldn't be going close to that area. I think he was afraid I would ask
him to take you some cookies - Ha!!! I'm excited to see the pictures you
have sent home to your parents. We all miss you but we're happy you are
where you are and doing what you are doing. Has Fredrico been baptized
yet?
This election mess is SO frustrating isn't it?
I really shouldn't watch it but I can't resist. Chris Jordin called
me one day last week and she said, "Barbara, I have lost $6,000 in the
stock market in the last couple months"!!! I guess that is a small
amount compared to what many people have lost. I hope all of you haven't
lost your fortunes!!!
I LOVE YOU ALL SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE
SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B
