Weekly Report May 21, 2000
Dearest Family,
HAPPY 15TH BIRTHDAY TO SARAH TODAY!!! What a sweet and
lovely young woman Sarah is on her birthday. They invited me to come have
her birthday dinner with her this afternoon and it was WONDERFUL to be with her
- she got new jeans, new top and a new "glistening" belt for her
birthday and she is so tiny she looked adorable. She had requested
"grilled salmon" for dinner and it was delicious along with everything
else and a delicious chocolate birthday cake with 15 candles on it!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN - he completed the triathlon he has been
training for. I talked to him last night when he got home and I said,
"I'll bet you are tired" and he said, "I'm bushed"!!! He
said the water was mighty cold and it was hard but he felt REALLY good about
everything and I'M VERY PROUD OF YOU JOHN!!! He said some of his friends
from work were there to cheer him on - I believe there were five from his office
who started out to train for this but John was the only one who stayed with it.
That says a lot for your character, John. I remember
"stick-to-it-ive-ness" as being something all of us should strive for.
THANKS SO MUCH TO BOB!!! I came home from being with
Margaret in Salt Lake shopping yesterday and she wanted to look at my yearbooks
from the era of World War II. I came downstairs to look for them and went
into my storage room and saw that Bob had put up a lot more shelves. I had
filled up the other ones and when he saw that, I guess he decided I needed more.
I AM SO THRILLED - I have many things still on the floor in the downstairs
den that will be put on the shelves. I don't know if any of you remember
the little doll carriage I had in my living room but one of the wheels has been
broken for a long, long time - I have wired it many times but it wouldn't stay.
Bob took it to a welder and had it fixed - now I will get my 65-plus year
old dolls out and fix them up to put in it. I appreciate his help so very
much - I don't know when he finds time to do all the things he does. The
Bob Mellors had an exciting thing happen in their home this week. They
could hear something strange in their fireplace that had been going on for quite
awhile so they decided to take it apart. They found a little family of
raccoons and the noise they could hear was the mother nursing her little babies
- WOW!!! I used to have birds fly into mine when I lived in Orem but I
have never heard of raccoons in a fireplace. Bob said the people who
installed their fireplace had forgotten to put a cap on one of the chimneys.
ANNIE -Thank you for your e-mail. I love to hear about all
your plans for Susanna's wedding, Russell's graduation and everything else
you're involved in right now. This is such a busy time in yours and Ron's
lives. I am wondering when Steve's parents are coming to visit too. I
would love to meet them - I would fix lunch if they would like to come visit me
- I also know how short their visit will be so I will understand if they don't
have the time. I will be to Russell's graduation exercises in the Marriott
on May 26th at 11 a.m. so save me a seat. I can't believe that Jessie has
been to Rhode Island - Barji told me one of her friends from college had to go
so Jessie rode with her. That is a mighty long road trip but one I would
surely enjoy if I were Jessie's age - I'll bet they had a WONDERFUL time. Did
they see Brown University where Roy and Patrice spent 8 years of their lives
(I'm not sure Patrice was there that long).? I love Rhode Island and I
will never forget when Roy took us to see those gorgeous homes right on the
beach close to Providence. The make a delicious sweet bread there too that
Roy introduced us to - did you find any of that? I hope Jessie will tell
me all about it. I think it's great that she has an internship with Salt
Lake Magazine for the Summer - she will learn a lot and find out if that is the
field she should pursue in school. I hope Russell gets his job with NuSkin.
JESSE MELLOR - Thank you SO much for your e-mail. I love it
when my grandchildren think of me and send me little notes - I can brag to my
friends that my little first grade grandson can use the internet - Ha!!! I'm
sure Emily helps him and I appreciate that. I LOVE to look at the pictures
taken while I was in Little Rock - all of you with your Easter eggs and then all
of us at your dinner table on Easter. I had such a WONDERFUL time with all
of you and I miss you very much.
I went to Salt Lake last Monday to attend the funeral of that man
who died while on his mission in Thailand.
I was very happy I had made the decision to go - his widow was very appreciative
and there were about 15 of us who had also served with him and his wife. President
Faust represented the First Presidency and spoke and Bro. Featherstone of the
Quorum of Seventys also spoke and there were quite a few people from the L.D.S.
Charities department of the church who also attended. It was interesting -
they don't embalm dead people in Thailand and even though the Governor
intervened and really tried to find a mortuary to do it, they had a closed
casket because they couldn't do a good job. When we have a funeral, we
invite friends to attend a "viewing" and when they have someone die in
Thailand they invite friends to a "burning" because they cremate
there. It was a beautiful service - they had nine children and they all
participated. We all went to dinner after the funeral and I was very late
in getting to work but the people were nice about it - I called them about 4
o'clock and said I would be late.
Jeannie gave me a "tour" of their landscaping today.
They have done a beautiful job and I hope everything they have planted
grows - Jeannie said that Rick awakened her about six o'clock this morning with
a shout to come look out their windows - the horses in their backyard were
chewing on the leaves of the trees they had just planted - Ha!!!
I went to DUP meeting on Wednesday and it was very nice. It
was a potluck luncheon and one of the ladies brought delicious fresh strawberry
tarts for everyone. When I commented on what a big job that must have been
she told me she had also made 40 beef pot pies that morning. She is a
professional "pie maker" in Davis County and she said she would teach
me how to make meat pies - that would be fun.
Jeannie and I went to hear Frankie and Chuck Coulter
"report" about their mission in Corpus Christi, Texas this afternoon.
They have not changed one single bit and it was SO good to see them again.
Do you all remember them? They came into the church while Daddy was
Branch President and they were REALLY converted and wanted to move closer to the
headquarters of the church. They bought a lovely home very close to
Lagoon. JOHN - I talked to Andy and he is completely bald. Have you
seen him lately? He was married this Summer and Frankie came home for his
wedding - his wife is darling - very dark complexion. I also talked to
Julie, their little girl that we were sure had a guardian angel watching over
her because she would wander all over and Frankie and Chuck didn't have the
faintest idea where she was most of the time. She is getting married in
August to a man who already has two little children - she is beautiful!!!
Barji's friend, Boyd, will be home June 2nd. We are all
interested in that friendship and I think Barji would be happy if we were not
all that interested - Ha!!! Ricky - we talked a lot about you today - we
know you are doing good and sometime I want to see the video you sent to your
family - THEY LOVE IT!!!
I LOVE YOU ALL SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY
CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B
