Weekly Report July 28, 1999
Dearest Family,
I didn't write my letter the first of this week because I was in
Scofield. I went there on Saturday afternoon - the 24th of July. I
wanted to watch the parade on television and then give the crowd time to get
home so the traffic wouldn't be bad - I didn't leave here until early
afternoon. I have always enjoyed parades and it has been a long, long time
since I have seen that one and it was fun to watch it.
I stopped in Lehi to see my "used to be Aunt", Lucille
Webb. She was married to my Uncle Hugh and she was SO good to Lela and me.
She married Vern Webb after Uncle Hugh died and he had three daughters -
their mother had died. She raised these girls through their teenage years
and they are just wonderful to her. One of the girls called me a couple
weeks ago and said they had put her in a rest home so I went to visit with her -
I took her a "Wendy's Frosty" like we used to take to Aunt Marvel and
she loved it!!! This rest home used to be an apartment building just a few
blocks West from where Aunt Marvel lived and it is just beautiful - I was REALLY
surprised. Lucille is 88 years old and is in quite good health - she still
keeps her hair dark and is so pretty and sweet. Her mind is failing - she
would start to say something and then just stop because she couldn't think of
the words she wanted - WOW, CAN I RELATE TO THAT!!! When I asked her how
she was she said, "I am not well and I don't even care - I just hope this
doesn't go on too long" so she knows what is happening to her.
Then I went to visit with John. I AM SO IMPRESSED WITH JOHN
AND JULIANNA'S HOME!!! They have done a beautiful job with the landscaping
in their front yard - I have never seen such beautiful annual flowers - they
have them in every color and they are gorgeous and so healthy. John had
just finished weeding them. You all know how much I love the inside of
their home - it looks so much larger than when I lived there - it's SO bright
and just lovely in every way. They have used such good judgment in the
things they have done - they have changed the light fixtures and I LOVE their
new ones. We had a good visit. Julianna is still with her friends
back East helping her with her new baby.
I called Annie while I was at Johns and we also had a good visit.
This is such a busy, busy time in their lives and also such a happy, happy
time!!! Jimmy and Ron were camping - Ron as a leader and I know he enjoys
that BUT IT IS SO HOT HERE!!! I believe this goes on, off and on, for the
next couple weeks. Russell is getting ready for the football season,
LeeAnna for the cheer leading season, and Susanna and Jessie are busy working.
I got in Scofield before dark and everything was SO beautiful
there. There were many campers along the shore and lots of boats on the
lake - it was a pretty sight. Chris and Wayne had left the cabin in such
good shape and since I knew how clean it was I REALLY enjoyed it. It is
funny to be there when I don't have a project and I must get one when I go up
there next - I need to scrape the paint off the deck and seal it before Winter.
The dock is SO nice and I went to sit on it just before dark and it was so
pleasant. I didn't dare fish because I didn't have a license and I have
heard they have wardens come to check quite often. I thought I would have
to go somewhere special to get a license so I have just put it off but now I
hear that I can get one at K-Mart so I will do that - then I'll have to learn
how to put a hook on a line - Ha!!! It is fun to watch the people on their
docks and I can't help but think of how much Papa would have loved it.
I was REALLY lazy and would you believe I had to have the heater
on!!! I watched television and they kept telling how hot it was in Salt
Lake - 94 and 96 degrees - and I thought how foolish for me to come home. I
worked on "my rug", wrote letters, read and watched television. It
was quieter there than I have ever seen it in the Summer - there were very few
people in Scofield West. I went to church on Sunday and I always enjoy
that. The gospel doctrine teacher is always so well prepared and has
handouts for her lesson - there are only 20 members in Scofield. The
people come in from Price for Sacrament meeting and I admire their commitment SO
VERY MUCH!!!
There is quite a lot of construction on the road going into Scofield and I had to
wait about ten minutes yesterday - there is also a lot of building construction
going on there.
I came home yesterday - Tuesday. I stopped at the new mall
in Provo and went to Dillards to buy some sport shoes because they were having a
sale - that is a gorgeous mall. THEN I wanted to see John &
Juliannas' dogs since I hadn't seen them on Saturday so I drove down that street
in back of their home to see if they would be in their back yard (I had
forgotten that I couldn't park in the college parking lot because of the
construction for the building). I couldn't see the dogs but I could see
John's truck in the driveway so I decided to go see him again. As it
turned out he wasn't home but there were workers on their roof putting in new
glass windows. I went to the side of their home and Tar, Moki and the
little female they haven't sold came to greet me. They are BEAUTIFUL
dogs!!! I would like the little one they have left if I could have a dog
in my condo.
THEN - I decided to go see Vonnie (my former neighbor to the
East). She was SO cute - she got me some cranberry juice and then ALL her
family pictures for me to see. I admire her - she is caring for her 92
year old mother and is far more independent than when I lived by her - it was
good for me to move away. She had spent the day out trimming her vines
that cover her deck and she had done a good job - when I lived by her she said
she couldn't see to do things like that.
I also dropped in to see Mae and Wayne Hacking - he has had
prostate cancer for 20 years!!! He certainly isn't in very good health but
looks better than I have seen him for a long time. I went to see Anne and
Percy Smith too but she was gone - Percy had just had cataract surgery and we
had a good visit. THEN I came home and got here about 6 o'clock. I
hurried to call Jeannie before she came over to water my tomatoes - I appreciate
having her do that SO much. I have several ripe ones and that has been a
fun thing to watch. Rick had gone to Price for his work and I guess we
just about passed each other on the road. Mary Ann went to Park City with
some of her friends for a "night out" - they have so much fun!!!
Barji is working just about full time at Mervyns selling shoes and she's
happy about that. Sarah and Mary Ann are teaching violin lessons in their
neighborhood and they love it. Mary Ann played a violin solo at a special
DUP meeting in Salt Lake last week - she surely does a lot of that and I'm proud
of her!!!
Claire and Laura came over to visit just before I left on
Saturday and they told me about their vacation in Hawaii - they really had a
good time!!! It is hard for me to believe that Katie and Brett have
started back to school. It is also hard for me to see Laura in the
driver's seat of their car. She will get her license in a couple weeks
when she turns 16 and she is SO excited - she is a very serious and responsible
young woman so I'm not worried about her driving by herself one bit. John
showed me the computer that Michael made for him - that blows me away!!!
I MISS EMILY, TIMOTHY AND JESSE - I wish they could "drop
in" for a swim. I know that all of you who have been in my den have
noticed the paper I have on my television telling everyone that my remote
doesn't turn it on or control the volume. WELL - after the Roy Mellor's
visit I have found that they FIXED IT!!! I remember Patrice telling me
that the children probably could and then I forgot about it. I couldn't
believe it when I tried it the other night and IT WORKED!!! THANK YOU VERY
MUCH - but tell me how you did it!!! I would love to see Sammy now as he
has been welcomed into your home - is he chewing on things??? I hope Suzie
is enjoying her vacation.
I am going to go swimming. I don't like to go alone but my
condo friend who said she usually swims about 8 - 9 in the morning isn't there.
It is very convenient for me to be able to look out my window and see if
it is crowded.
I LOVE YOU ALL SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY
CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B
