Weekly Report May 17, 1999
Dearest Family,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO SARAH ON FRIDAY
- I hope you have a very WONDERFUL 14th birthday!!! I have a hard time
realizing that my grandchildren are growing up but I am very proud of all of
you.
WOW - THE SUN IS SHINING!!!
I haven't lived in Utah for a long time but as I remember it, May was usually
quite warm. We have had cold rainy weather but today is going to be in
the 70's. I may even plant some geraniums that I bought a while back.
I know that John and Julianna and Ann have planted a lot of flowers and I hope
they haven't frozen - I have been covering everything in this little yard but
I don't have a lot to cover.
JOHN AND JULIANNA - HOW ARE THE
PUPPIES??? I love to look at the picture you sent via the internet.
Jeannie and I were on our way to your home on Friday night after going to the
Crawford wedding reception - we decided to stop and call to make sure you were
home but you weren't so we didn't go - your answering machine wasn't working
either. I am dying to see them.
This has been a fun week. I went to Park
City with my neighbor, Margaret, on Wednesday. It was a pretty day and I
have always loved Park City - she has bought a new condo up there and they
were delivering some furniture. Her condo is very, very nice and huge.
She also owns another condo up there that she has just put in the "rent
pool" - she has many places to live and with all her energy and
"know how" she can manage it. She owns these things with her
sons and daughter, I think. She is a lovely person and I really, really
like her and I don't feel any pressure to "keep up". She is
sponsoring a golf tournament today along with Utah State University to honor
her husband, Delonne Anderson and she invited me to a dinner last night and a
luncheon today at the Country Club but I declined and that's okay with her.
I went to Salt Lake yesterday after church to have
dinner with my sweet Montana Missionary couple - David and Polly Taylor -
Margaret insisted that I take her cell phone because I didn't know where they
lived. I had directions to their home but as usual I got lost and her
phone really came in handy - I don't want one but she is very thoughtful.
David and Polly have two little energetic boys and said they wanted to see me
but it would be better if I went to their home rather than having them come to
my condo. When it gets warmer so they can swim in the pool it will be
fun for them to come here. They have a lovely home and their little boys
look like miniature Davids. I kept thinking how much Polly reminds me of
Patrice in the way she is rearing their children - she is adamant about them
not watching much television. I had listened to the Jazz and Kings game
on the way to their home and I was dying to know the score but I didn't even
see a television set. I didn't know the Jazz had won until I finally
found it on the car radio and I was just about home.
I got home from Park City in time to go to Katie's
soccer game and that was fun. One of the mothers there had brought an
umbrella and an extra chair and I REALLY enjoyed the game. Katie is such
a good little player - she divides her time between jazz dance and soccer so
she goes to each one for thirty minutes. I think it is great that her
coach will let her do that.
Thursday I went to the Rogers' Memorial Theatre
with the "condo group" to see the play "Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers" - I thought it was just excellent. The male soloist was
professional and I could have listened to him sing all night.
Friday I drove into Midvale (just about to Murray)
to go to a funeral for the sister of one of my good Brigham City friends,
Helen Jane. I was glad I went because Helen Jane spoke and she seemed
very happy to see me. When we were in High School we were in a French
horn quartet and had to go to Salt Lake for some kind of competition and we
stayed at this sister's home.
I came home from Midvale and then about 7 o'clock,
Jeannie and I drove to Alpine to go to a wedding reception for Jessica Lyn
Crawford - Chris and Missys' daughter. There was a long, long line and
Jeannie saw Carolyn Crawford Perkes go in the back door so we decided to do
that too. I am SO glad we did - Gerald Perkes got each one of us a piece
of chocolate pie and we sat and visited with Ramona and Gerald and Carolyn and
then we broke into the line and shook Chris and Missys' hands and then came
home. It was a beautiful affair and Missys' dress was white leather.
I thought they were a struggling student couple so I got them a toaster from
K-Mart. As it turned out he is a prosperous dentist and for wedding
gifts they gave each other brand new Harley Davidson motorcycles. OH
WELL!!!
I went to a DUP "Jubilee" on Saturday
morning. That was quite an experience for me. I am not used to
things like that but I think it will be good for me and encourage me to do my
genealogy. Most of the members are very, very old. I wish I would
have taken my camera so I could have taken a picture of one of the members
there - she is almost 94 years old and she was in a dress that was just
darling - it was cotton and had a full skirt with a white ruffle on the
bottom. She lives alone and is very bright - I DON'T WANT TO LIVE THAT
LONG!!!
I am going to have a party on Saturday night for
my old High School friends. I want to honor Ellen Mae because it is her
birthday but she gets too upset when I even mention it so I am going to order
a cake that will say "Happy Birthday To All Who Have Had Their 74th
Birthday"!!! I am one of the youngest if not the youngest.
The weather forecast is for stormy weather - I'm hoping it will change and be
nice.
Annie called me this morning and
we had a good visit. She said they are just about finished with their
new addition - I believe they are painting now. It is just a perfect
thing for their home and I would never have thought they needed it.
Susanna is in school and is working at "Mom and Me". Jessie is
going to start the next semester in a few weeks so she is also working.
I'm sure Russell, Lee Anna and Jimmy are busy too. I can't keep up with
everyone!!!
My Relief Society President came and asked me if I
would tutor a young boy who is in the fifth grade. His family is
struggling and therefore he isn't doing well in school. His parents have
divorced and the mother works while her five children ages 14 - 3 years are
home alone. I didn't want to get committed but I couldn't say no.
It is only twice a week for an hour - surely I can do that!!! I feel
qualified to teach reading but when it comes to the new math I cannot help
him. His teachers says he just needs help with the math facts - using
flash cards.
I have the picture of Emily,
Timothy and Jesse playing on the beach in Gulf Shores on my refrigerator and I
am amazed at the sand castles they have built. I am SO excited for you
to come here. I want to take you to Antelope Island - there is a beach
there and I have never seen anyone swimming in the salty lake but I have heard
they do. It will be a fun contrast for them to see this water as
compared to the ocean water in Alabama. It only takes a little while to
get to Antelope Island from where I live now - about half an hour.
The man from whom I bought this condo is here - he
came to play in the Delonne Anderson golf tournament. It will be good to
see him and ask him some questions about things like the shrubs outside that I
want to trim.
That's all the news. I LOVE
YOU ALL SO VERY, VERY MUCH. PLEASE BE SO VERY, VERY CAREFUL IN
EVERYTHING YOU DO. Grandma B
