Thailand Letter
Dearest John, August 7, 1998 9:30 p.m.
THIS HAS NOT BEEN MY DAY!!! I went to the ATM and got 10,000 bahts and I already had about 7,500 bahts - I need to pay my rent. I then went to a printer shop and had copies made for my Relief Society Lesson on Sunday - then I went to the Villa Market and got some groceries. When I went to pay for them I didn't have my wallet. I hurried and ran to the printer shop to see if I had left it there and they didn't have it. I TRULY do not know what happened to it - my roommates think someone followed me from the ATM but I had my purse straps over my shoulder and I don't see how anyone could have reached into my purse.
I tried to call you tonight but I got your answering service. I guess I need to talk to you. I did cancel my Visa card but I couldn't do it until 8:30 tonight and I am just hoping no one has used it this afternoon. I have all kinds of numbers to call and I will call again tomorrow to see if they can tell me if anyone has used it - they did “block” it for me. I also have a number to call First Security in Lehi to see if they will send me another card.
Would you please call the Lehi Bank to see if they will send me another one in case I don't get them? Be sure to have them send it air mail.
In the meantime could you please go to Zion's Bank and see if they would cash a check for me in the amount of $500 and send it to Bangkok like you did before?
I am just sick about this. My roommates have loaned me 10,000 bahts and they say I could have more if I need it so don't worry about my being without money right now.
I hope to hear from you soon. On top of all this, our modem connection isn't working so I may not even be able to send this - OH ME!!!
I love you so much. Momxxxxxxxxxoooooooooooo

I just accessed your letter - THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR HELPING ME!!!
My roommate, Darlene, has two months' rent so she will loan me money until I can get another card. All my roommates have offered to loan me some so don't worry about it. It is SO bad to think that people in good places would steal - they always warn us about it when we go to the weekend market but I would never have thought it would be stolen at the Villa Market. I have gone over and over what I think happened and I have come to the conclusion that when I was taking things out of my “cart” to be priced I had my wallet in my hand and I either put it down in the cart and someone took it or they slipped it out of my hand - they did it SO quickly that I didn't notice it - PROFESSIONAL THIEVES, I guess!!!
One of the clerks in the market kept telling me “no problem” and he handed me a 100 baht bill - he was laughing and I said, “It isn't funny” - as I think back on it I believe the clerks pricing my groceries took it. Isn't that terrible???
I will be just fine and I love you SO much - Mom
