Thailand Letter
Dear Family (from Bob), June 14, 1998
Mom is doing great job of helping us see Thailand. I regret the “tour guide from hell” remark. Today we went to a big market all in the canals out of boats. Claire and Michael rode on an elephant. We couldn't talk anyone into the “snake around the neck” thing for the picture.
We ate at “Planet Hollywood” in Bangkok tonight so Michael could get a little dose of America. We found a 7 story mall with nothing but computers and parts( Mom and her roommates didn't know it existed). I bought Mom a phone signal splitter for one dollar. They have been unplugging their phone and manually connecting it to their modem to use the internet each time for the last year (amazing!!!!).
They are really helping the Thai people with their English. Mom has made some very dear friends that will be hard for her to leave.
The shopping is incredible. I bought a hand-carved elephant out of Teakwood today and we got to see them carving them. The guy said it takes about two months to carve. The only downside is it is as big as one of my suitcases. The variety of stuff is unbelievable. I recommend bringing extra suitcases. We brought a huge one just for Grandma's junk. I also recommend some comfortable waterproof shoes( I'm wearing Tevas but I have blisters because my feet aren't used to them) and a small umbrella. Michael is having a ball shopping etc. He is starting to miss home though. He likes to go to the American food places. Some of the Thai food is delicious.
I'll send pictures when we get back.
Love,
Bob
