Thailand Letter
September 3, 1997
Dearest Family,
It's 7 p.m. Wednesday and your message and pictures just came through Bob. I truly cannot believe what I am seeing. Three pictures of their trip to the Colorado Mountains; one of Bob and Michael and it looks like Michael is carrying a huge backpack, the group of 15 lined up with gorgeous scenery in the background and we especially loved seeing the snow, and then one of Michael with two others in the group and a clothes line in the background with a sleeping bag and other things on it. I feel like I have had a trip to the mountains and will try to internalize the feeling of snow - Ha!!! The scenery in the pictures is SO special - the clouds in the first picture are so distinct and beautiful. I have tried to print them but I can't - maybe Marc will be able to tell me how. We are supposed to have a color printer but we don't have a color cartridge but at least I would be able to see them in black and white.
I was SO thrilled to have a letter from Roy on the computer when I came home today. He has gone dove hunting with Tripp Strauss and his father and they shot 16 dove. I was describing Little Rock to the Assistant Director of the school we were at today and I said the climate was just like Bangkok right now but it does get quite cool in the Winter. It has been raining a lot here and it is SO MUGGY. It is so funny - they dredged the canal in front of our townhouse and we had this huge pile of yucky looking stuff right in front - you wouldn't believe it now - it has grown over with pretty green foliage. The smell of the khlong is still there but at least it looks much nicer.
We don't have water today - we don't know what happened. We buy all our water so we have drinking water but we can't flush the toilets or do any laundry. This happens quite often!!!
Roy mentioned the devaluing of the Thailand Baht. I can buy a Minolta Camera for about 5,800 bahts - is that a good deal? My Olympus Camera is still taking excellent pictures so maybe I shouldn't even worry about getting another one - that has been such a good camera.
I'm wondering about Sarah and the Nutcracker Clara - Ricky, if he made the golf varsity team - Mary Ann, if she has won any volleyball games - Barji, if she is still hearing from Boyd. I know of the many disappointments young people (and old people) have in life and it's all "part of the game" and we smile through them. SO KEEP SMILING!!!
Thank you SO very much for all your WONDERFUL support. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. Grandma B. Isn't that the saddest thing about Princess Diana???
