Dearest John; Roy, Patrice, Emily & Timothy; Bob, Claire, Michael, Laura, Brett & Katie; Rick, Jean, Ricky, Barbara Jean, Mary Ann & Sarah; and Ron, Ann, Susanna, Jessie, Russell, LeeAnna & Jimmy:
I just came in from the garden - I have had a bountiful harvest and it has been fun but it's a lot of work. I just give everything away and I say every year that I'm not going to plant that much again but I probably will. My tomatoes have been WONDERFUL and they're still coming on and the raspberries have been WONDERFUL too - I worried because I cut them clear to the ground in the Spring but I'll do that again next year because they are healthier plants. I have eaten SO many peaches too - this has been a good fruit year from Utah county but Box Elder counties' peaches were mostly frozen and their display at Peach Days was very small so I heard.
Bob - thank you for winterizing the cabin!!! Bob took Brett, Katie and Jimmy to the cabin on Friday and the weather was rainy until Sunday but he called last night and said they had had a good time. Claire took the other children up on Saturday and Sunday was a beautiful day. I'm not going up there again until next Spring and Bob didn't know when he would get up there again so it was best to get it ready for Winter. I took the porta pottie up there and there is a lot of water in jugs in the skunk room so any of you who want to "rough" it you're welcome to go but just don't put any water through the drains. I'm SO glad Bob understands how to do that and will take the time because it is all Greek to me. John said he would help him but he was out of town this weekend.
There is an article about "Viewpoint" in the paper and I will have it copied and send to you. It sounds like they are changing the name - it wasn't really all that clear. What a wonderful opportunity that has been for John - he has put his whole heart and soul into it and so have the others who work there so I hope it continues to do well.
Roy and Patrice, I want to hear about the Goat Roast at your church. Patrice said that has been a tradition around Labor Day and they have always roasted chickens but this year they were going to roast a goat. John had goat while he was on his mission but I don't believe he really cared for it. I have looked for Emily's green turtle neck sweater but I can't find it - I'll be embarrassed if you find it under a bed or somewhere I haven't cleaned when you come - I'll keep looking!!! I'm SO excited about coming to be with you and I wish I could bring you some tomatoes and raspberries.
Jean & Rick - what have you been up to??? A friend of mine has a daughter who is moving to your area- her last name is Morgan and her husband is with Morgan Asphalt Co. Woolleys - I really missed you last night!!! Our mutual is planning a Halloween party and they had a meeting last night at 6 o'clock and then from there we went to the Hale Theatre for a fireside so they couldn't come for Family Home Evening. My Sunday was just not the same!!! I hope you're feeling better Ann - you sounded terrible over the phone with a bad cold!!!
I had a fun time on Saturday. I have a friend who lives up in the Oak Hills Stake - just South for where Ann & Ron live. They were having a special Women's Conference and she invited me and another college friend to come to it. The Young Women General Board Presidency gave the talks and they were outstanding. Janette Hale is the President and I had heard here speak on television before but not in person and I was SO impressed with her - her mother had died the day before the conference and it would have been so easy for her to cancel but she didn't. They had a luncheon afterwards and I hope to get the recipe for the open faced sandwich they served - it looked like they had divided half of a French bread loaf into thirds and they "piled" a mixture of shredded chicken, olive slices, yellow pepper and some kind of soup and cheese and then they broiled it so it was crisp.
I am going to go get Ed Baird tonight to take him to Beth Tippett's home for our Family Home Evening. I have told you about him before - he is blind and is in his early nineties. He walks all over Orem with long white canes. He gives recitations from memory about the early prophets of the church and it is quite remarkable. He is from Brigham City and he tells me that he remembers my Father and my Grandfather and how they used to play their trumpets - it's fun to be with him. I went to a party at Beth's home last week and he gave his talk there too - that party was for people who knew each other in Laramie, Wyoming - Ed was Institute Director in Laramie but we had just left so we didn't know him there. I have known him all my life. He served as Mission President with the Indians in Arizona many years ago his wife died several years ago.
I had looked forward to watching the Miss America Pageant on Saturday night and was so comfortable in my bed with popcorn close by. I listened to Miss South Carolina sing "Summer Time" and that was the last I remember Hearing - I awakened and could hear them giving sports scores and I couldn't understand why they were doing that on the Miss America show - I looked at the clock and it was 11:47 - I had slept through the whole thing!!! I was glad when I heard the next day that she had won because I at least had heard her talent.
Carol called me late one night last week (she is a night person) and she wanted our family group sheet - she is teaching the Family History class in her ward and I guess she wants to get her own genealogy up to date. I took the information off that booklet that John made and it doesn't have Patrice's middle name, the county of Darien, Conn., Jean & Rick's temple marriage date, or John's endowment date - please send me that information.
