Happy Columbus Day!!! If he had landed in Orem, Utah today he would NEVER have left - it is really another gorgeous day. I know this letter won't go out today but I'm going to write it anyway. There is a lot of work I need to do outdoors and this would be a good day to do it so this will be a short letter. I have hated to pull up my beautiful flowers but on television this morning they announced that it would freeze towards the end of the week so I guess it's time. They said to drain the sprinkling systems so I called John and he is going to come by tomorrow and do it for me. Daddy showed me how to do it and I have it all written down but for something that important I will feel better if John does it. I am also going to go get some of that black dirt they get from Utah Lake and pile it up around my roses - I can get it in some large buckets we have and then transfer it to the roses in my "little red wagon".
I took Hans and Frauie in for their annual checkups and vaccinations this morning. I got up early so I could shampoo them and have them dry before I took them. They looked so cute and while I was standing at the counter with Hans on his leash he wet all over my foot, shoe and pants - I could have killed him. I had to take my shoe apart to clean it. The vet said he really liked to see such healthy dogs as they are. He thought Hans was a little overweight but when he weighed him and saw that he only weighed 21 pounds he decided he was okay - Frauie weighs 18.
Did you all watch the debates last night??? I have been disgusted with Perot until last night and he was really comical and made sense for the first time. I'm sure he won't get many votes but he had made the election a lot more interesting. I am losing confidence in Bush - he really is getting desperate.
Emily - it was SO good to talk to you last night. She is so much fun to talk to - she has an answer for everything and is so enthusiastic about life. They had just come home from the State Fair in Little Rock and that brought back a million memories. She was so impressed with all the animals they had seen, especially the "Yak" and she told me there was a sign that said to not pet the "Yak". She named off every animal they had seen I can't imagine anything more fun than going to the fair with Emily and I'll bet Timothy was fun too. I will really have something to look forward to at Christmas time now - ROY AND PATRICE,
EMILY AND TIMOTHY ARE COMING TO SPEND A WEEK WITH ME. Roy said he has the week before Christmas off so I'm assuming that is when they will be here and that will be wonderful - actually more fun and excitement than Christmas week. I'll bet the "Skousins" will have that week off from school.
The Woolleys came over last night for Family home Evening and I LOVED it. It was great to have Ron with them - he comes when he can but quite often he has to go out of town Sunday afternoons. Little Jimmy was in charge of it last night and he had us each draw two pictures of things that we love the most. I drew pictures of my seven grandsons and nine granddaughters - I really do love each on one of them and am very proud of them.
This weekend is the weekend for vacations I guess. The Bob Mellors are going to California with their children to go to Disneyland; the Woolleys are going to Bryce Canyon where they have reservations at a lodge there; and the Roy Mellors are going to New Orleans where Roy will attend some medical meetings. I haven't heard if the Weinerts or John are planning to go anyplace. I hope you all have a WONDERFUL time. I was happy to have Roy tell me last night that they have a couple coming to stay with their children - the wife is Emily's former pre-school teacher and I met her and she is darling and her husband who is retired will be with her.
Dianne Power came to Utah last week and spent a day with me. I knew she was coming and was hoping she cold go to the Orem Women's Club meeting with me because last year's Mill Utah presented the program. We left about 10 o'clock in the morning and went into Salt Lake to a craft store where she got some materials and baskets to decorate for Brick's wedding. Dianne is so talented and I can see why - she is very particular about what she wants - she was looking for white roses and didn't want just cotton ones, they had to be satin. We didn't leave Salt Lake until after noon and the club meeting started at 2 o'clock so we stopped in Lehi at Porter's Place for lunch - it was fun and she is just a doll to be with. Brick is in law school at BYU and will be married a couple days after Christmas in Salt Lake.
The church is really taking an active role in trying to stop the passage of the bill for
pari-mutuel horse racing here in Utah. I had to take literature to people on our street. Wilford Brimley called a press conference to protect the active role the church is taking and he was actually rude and crude using very coarse language - I'm glad he doesn't lease my land anymore. He has a gorgeous ranch west of Lehi.
I'm going to my Family Home Evening meeting tonight, Relief Society homemaking in the morning and mutual tomorrow night. I really do keep busy and have wonderful friends.
I love each one of you very much. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Let me know how I can help you.
