Dearest John; Roy, Patrice, Emily & Timothy; Bob, Claire, Michael, Laura, Brett & Katie; Rick, Jean, Ricky, Barbara Jean, Mary Ann & Sarah; and Ron, Ann, Susanna, Jessie, Russell, LeeAnna & Jimmy:
Happy Human Rights Day!!! I believe that is what the holiday for Martin Luther King's birthday is called - Ha!!! The Woolleys came over last night to visit and they were excited because they would not have school today and it was interesting to talk to Susanna and get her feelings about King. We have been quite negative about him through the years but we should never pass our feelings on to the younger generations. I believe one of the most interesting things about getting old is to see the difference in the attitudes of generations concerning things that happened during the younger part of our lives - especially things like World War II, the Kennedy & King assassinations, the depressions, etc., etc.!!!
We are having really cold weather - it was 2 degrees in Salt Lake this morning and our outdoor thermometer read 6 when we got up. We need moisture but it is too cold to snow. Ron took their older children skiing at Brighton today and I'm SO happy the sun is shining - they will have fun.
Daddy & I had a fun evening with Ann & Jean and their girls on Friday night. We all went to the City Rep production of Gershwin Musicals and it was wonderful. They played and sang so many of the songs Daddy & I love - one of the things I enjoy most about those productions is the enjoyment of the singers and dancers - they seem to really have a lot of fun in doing it.
Rick took Ricky on an overnight scout outing that Friday night. They were going cross country skiing - we wonderful if they planned to build snow caves and sleep outdoors - Jeannie didn't know for sure what they were going to do.
Bob - thanks for going to the "Boat Meeting". Ann was proud of you for sticking up for her about the boat cushions - we agree that she has replaced them enough. We hope the families will be able to enjoy both times this Summer - we have only gone once for the past two Summers!!!
Roy - thanks for your phone call. There was so much confusion in our house when you called. Everyone was outside looking at Ray's new truck and I didn't know why. He has bought a different truck and I think he paid about $8,000.00 for it and he gets less than ten miles per gallon - our truck does better than that and we don't use it because we think it costs too much. You have REALLY had some cold temperatures in Little Rock too - it feels colder there because of the humidity too. You said everyone was fine - we hope so much that little Timothy stays healthy this Winter - Emily too, but she hasn't had the colds he has had.
John is doing fine - he is enjoying his guitar and has started taking his lessons again. We don't think he has much of a social life but we love having him home with us. I'll be happy when he can start riding his bicycle again because he needs more exercise. He doesn't like the snow sports and that surprises me. We're wondering how long he will keep his bread - I'm getting used to it and quite like it.
Daddy is feeling so much better than he did a month ago and for the entire month of December. He is off the pain patches or any kind of pain killer so the radiation has helped a lot. The real problem he has now is in his jaw. He got one of those football mouth guards and heated it in boiling water and cut it to fit his mouth - he wears it all the time and says it makes all the difference in the world. When he showed it to Dr. Brown, he said, "Mr. Mellor, don't you know the doctors are supposed to come up with the
remedies, not the patients". He is eating most everything through a straw except really soft things - he tries to drink two cans of that "Ensure" a day. Jeannie - thank you for that powdered protein stuff - we haven't tried it yet. He has lost a lot of weight but I feel that he will gain it back. His coloring is REALLY good. He didn't sleep at all last night and finally got up and went downstairs - he wasn't in pain but he just couldn't sleep. I believe it's because he sleeps too much during the day and I'm going to try to keep him awake more. We'll start walking at the mall soon too.
We are having A LOT of company!!! Ellen Mae & Mel came one day last week and had some chili with us and we were enjoying their visit SO much when Ray & his son, Brent, came. Ray became ill while he was here with that nausea that's going around. They left and another couple from our ward came. Yesterday we had our neighbor, Keith Smith, come right after church and then right after that our friends, the McEuens came. It is really good for us to have people come and Daddy enjoys it. Our Brigham City friends, (they live in Salt Lake now), are coming down next Monday night and we're going out to dinner and then visit over here afterwards. It's Melvin Thayne's birthday and they need an excuse to get together - Ha!!!
I'm in charge of my luncheon club this month. We're going to "The Olive Garden" for lunch and then they will come over here to visit afterwards. I really would prefer to cook lunch for them but most everyone likes to eat out.
We're wondering if the Bob Mellors have had time to go skiing very much - we know Claire and Michael really love it. The lake at Scofield had a lot of snowmobilers on it when we were there last week. I guess that is really a lot of fun - most of our neighbors who have children have them and go a lot.
Roy & Patrice - people here are very impressed with Bill Clinton!!! I'll bet there is a lot of excitement in Arkansas with him in the news so much. His infidelity finally made the news!!!
