March 10, 1991 Orem, Utah
Dearest John; Roy, Patrice, Emily & Timothy; Bob, Claire, Michael, Laura, Brett & Katie; Rick, Jean, Ricky, Barbara Jean, Mary Ann & Sarah; and Ron, Ann, Susanna, Jessie, Russell, LeeAnna & Jimmy:
We are having a beautiful day here in Orem and it is hard to believe the weathermen who have predicted snow starting tonight or tomorrow that will last for five days. I wouldn't be one bit surprised to hear them come on the air tomorrow and say "the storm that was headed our way will miss us completely". The ones they predict with such confidence usually are the ones that miss us. I hope we get the snow because we REALLY need it.
Daddy just left to go to church and our meetings don't start for another two hours. He has been called to be a stake auditor and yesterday when they called to tell him about this meeting I heard him tell them that it was impossible for him to sit with his head "looking down" for very long. His neck bothers him quite a bit and that really agitates it - we don't go to genealogy anymore unless he pushes it because that REALLY involves a lot of close "looking down". They are very understanding and we both know he is called to these positions because they want him to feel needed - they would not do anything that would cause him any stress. He sits with the hot pad on his neck some during the day and that seems to help!!!
We had the most fun evening last night that we have had for a long time. BYU and the University of Utah were playing for the WAC championship. It was only on cable but I didn't think too much about it - I guess because we haven't had cable for very long. Daddy & I spent the afternoon just "goofing off" - we drove out to Utah lake to see if the ice had cleared enough to do any fishing (there were a lot of people fishing off the bank for walleye). When we got home the Woolleys called to see if they could come watch the game with us and of course, we were thrilled that we at last had something they didn't have - Ha!!! (They can't get cable to their home because it isn't in that area yet.) I wished I had thought about it earliest and fixed sloppy joes or something for them - as it was, they stopped for hamburgers and brought them here to eat. That game was probably the best one I have ever seen and it was even better because BYU won - it went onto overtime and almost had to go into a second overtime. It was pure luck for BYU that it didn't go into a second overtime but BYU led them all the way so we felt they deserved to win. This was the first time BYU had ever been in the finals since the WAC was established seven years ago so that made it special. I get much too excited in those games - when they are that close I can never stay to watch the finish. I think I scared poor Jimmy out of his wits - he kept looking at me as if to say, "Grandma B Cool it!!!" They get to play in the NCAA tournament now and hopefully they will be televised on cable so the Woolleys will come again.
We have had a fun and busy week. Last Monday we had our Family Home Evening group here - we were going to get a Bingo game to play like Roy & Patrice had suggested but one of the ladies said she HATED bingo so we didn't - we just played hearts & rock but it was fun. I made an orange cake from the Little Rock Mansions Cook Book and it was good - we served orange sherbet with it.
Tuesday Daddy went to the dentist - bless his heart, along with his other aches & pains he has to have a crown replaced and a root canal. Daddy & John had been
subpoenaed to go to court in Salt Lake (they decided it was for a trial concerning the theft of our car two years ago). They were all prepared to go when they called and said they didn't need them - disappointing!!!
Wednesday, Daddy & I went to LeeAnna's school for "Grandparent's Day". We were there from 9:30 until 12 and had lunch with her - we just LOVED it. She has a darling teacher who had really gone the extra mile for grandparents and there were a lot there. It was fun to meet some of her friends and be with her.
Daddy went fishing on Thursday. He went with Ray and another man from Lehi and they went way down South again. I thought it was a beautiful warm day for them but when he came home he said they just about froze to death - they had to drill through two feet of ice. They caught their limits and were home by about 3 o'clock. We grilled them last night on our grill in the kitchen and they were really good cooked that way.
John is going a hundred miles an hour with his studies - I hope he doesn't cave in. He has decided to apply for dental school so he is taking those lessons that are supposed to help you with that test. He hasn't had any biology for a long time and has never had organic chemistry so it will be tough for him. We admire him for doing this and even though he may have to wait another year before he gets accepted it will be worth it for him. He left early this morning to go into Salt Lake to the University of Utah library to do a research paper for a biomedical engineering class he's taking. One of his classmates went with him and when he came this morning he was all sunburned because he had been skiing all day yesterday - I can't remember when John has had a free day like that - you can all relate to that though!
Rick - it really pleased us that your family considered going to the cabin this weekend (he called to talk to Daddy about it). They had over a foot of snow there a few days ago and Daddy doesn't think anyone would be able to get even to the gate and he knows it would be hard to shovel to get to turn the propane on. It will probably be at least another month before we can get in - we all need to invest in a snowmobile!!! One of our neighbors is throwing away some good carpet and wood - you guessed it - Daddy has told him he wants it - for the cabin!!! Don't ask me what he is going to do with it but he can't stand to pass up an opportunity like that - these neighbors have literally "gutted" that house but it is just gorgeous!!!
I used up too much space writing about the basketball game - I could erase it but it REALLY is important isn't it???
We talked to Bob this week and they're doing fine - (they called to order some pictures). We're pleased that you all are getting some and Bob says he wouldn't dare not order some - Ha!!! We had already ordered some for you but not as many as you wanted. We don't know when they will be ready - we told them there was no hurry - they were so good to hurry up the proofs for us. The Woolleys and us are ordering our Christmas cards - how about that - in March!!! He told us the 4 X 5's would be 20 cents each if we ordered one hundred - I think that is too cheap!!!
We haven't talked to Roy & Patrice but we know you're doing fine - it takes while to recuperate from a vacation. We really miss you. When we went out to Utah lake yesterday we saw so many families out there feeding those tame ducks and we wished we had taken Emily out there - that is such a fun thing to do so remind us when you come next time so we can be sure to do it.
I really believe that is all the news. We got the schedule for our Lake Powell time yesterday - it goes through 1992. We will have copies made for all of you and send them.
We love each one of you so very much. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL IN EVERYTHING YOU DO. Let us know how we can help you.
