P. S. December 5, 1990
I need to mention that the quarterback for BYU, Ty Detmer, won the Heisman trophy. Saturday was such an exciting day as I know everyone in this area was tuned in to watch the announcement on national television. SO many people had said he would never win it because of BYU playing in a "lesser ranked" tournament than Notre Dame or some of the other candidates' teams.
We thought it was interesting to read what Pres. Rex Lee, the President of BYU said about it - he said the Methodist from San Antonio probably did more missionary work in winning the Heisman than al the white shirted young men in the world - meaning the missionaries.
Saturday night, Daddy & I were invited to a dinner party to listen to Ed Baird give an impersonation of Enoch. It was a wonderful evening - most of the people had lived in Laramie, Wyoming about the time we did and we really enjoy them. Ed was Institute Director at the University of Wyoming for a long time and then was a Mission President of the South Western part of the United States. I always love to be with them because they were also very good friends of my parents and Ed told me how he used to love to hear my Grandfather Forrest play the trumpet - I haven't talked to anyone who even knew my Brigham City grandparents for a long, long time. Ed must be about 85 and he gives these impersonations of Biblical people all from memory - his wife prompts him if he needs it.
After the party we came home and listened to the BYU-Hawaii football game and WHAT A FIASCO!!!! I finally went to bed but Daddy continued to watch it until the very end and he kept scolding the BYU players for their blunders and by 1:30 in the morning I was wide awake and never did go back to sleep - Ha!!! Hawaii won the game - 59-28 - Ty was humiliated after winning the Heisman - he threw four interceptions.
We had Family Home Evening here on Monday night and we had so much fun. I had copied the words of some of the fun Christmas songs that we never sing like "Holly Jolly Christmas", etc. Daddy & I had practiced so he could lead and I could play the piano - just the top hand and we laughed and it was fun. Daddy told some Christmas stories and then we played rock - I served that chocolate pudding dessert that everyone loves. It was good to be with these friends - we have missed seeing a lot of them. Wayne Hacking who has had prostate cancer for about 8 years is now recovering from his second broken leg and they were here but we missed him Knecht who passed away a couple months ago.
As usual - this letter is more for my journal!!! Don't even try to read it.
