January 31, 1982 Little Rock, Ark.
Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie, Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barbara Jean and Roy,
We just finished watching the basketball game between the Razorbacks and Wake Forest - we lost 49-48 but it was really a good game - it was player here at the Barton Coliseum. The Razorbacks have won two really important games in the last two or three seconds but today they couldn't get close enough to make a basket. The Razorbacks are first in the Southwest Conference and this game didn't count but it would have been nice to win.
This is really a cold, rainy and dismal day - in fact, this past week has been downright miserable
weather wise. It was snowing this morning when we got up and we expected them to cancel church but they didn't - I had to give a talk so I was hoping they would - Cissy and Charles Beyers were going to come over and have dinner with us but they called early and said the roads were too bad. I was going to fix chicken breasts and since they weren't going to be here Daddy and John and I went to the Red Lobster - it was really good seafood. The last time we went there I got sick on their fried things so today I had a shrimp salad but Daddy and John had fried everything - we came home for dessert since I had boiled that Eagle Brand Milk to make the
caramel for that dessert with pineapple and Johnny had four servings of dessert - he is by far our biggest eater and it shows.
Roy - thanks for sending the pictures Jean and Rick sent back to us. We loved your little note and we hope you will like OB-GYN - I'll bet you will have a lot of night work with this " clerkship" - wish we were closer so we could hear about some of your work. Have you been able to do any skiing? It sounds like you're still having winter weather. They're having to much snow in Utah - it will flood in the Spring.
Annie and Jeannie - it was fun to talk to both of you this week and such a treat for us to talk to Susanna and Ricky - they are growing up without us and we don't like that. I had to laugh when Ann said that her house had been completely demolished while she was talking to us on the phone - that brought back so many memories - I used to wonder if it were worth it when I had to spend an hour or so cleaning up after a five minute telephone call. Jeannie - did you know that Pam Olinghouse's father had an accident about a year ago that has left him in bad shape mentally - some kind of fire. Do you ever hear from her?
Daddy and the other high priests in our ward organized and put on the Ward dinner last Friday night - Jim
Blankenship made the spaghetti sauce and we had that and salad and French bread and it was really nice - they had films for the children and then one that appealed to the adults too - our Bishop refuses to have dinners like that because our budget is so low so the other men took it on themselves to sponsor one. The dinner and the movies together cost $300 and they served over 200' people and asked for donations and they got more than the $300 so they're going to have a chili supper next month.
Daddy had the MIA come over here last Tuesday night for a cultural event - it was really funny because there was a National Geographic documentary on cable so they were supposed to watch that but Daddy didn't know there was also a Razorback basketball game - you can imagine how cultural their evening was. They fixed hot fudge sundaes and had a good time. Daddy is doing a wonderful job as Young Men Pres. I am still in the Primary and went to Jacksonville for leadership meeting last Thurs. Daddy didn't want me to go alone so he took me and the Stake Presidency was having their meeting with the Bishops that night too - he kinda' felt out of place but our Mission President had him go into a meeting with him. This is an adjustment for him.
Bob can't get his car to pass the safety inspection so he is going to bring it over in a few minutes to see if Daddy can help him fix it - something with the lights. We tended Michael last night because he had to stay at the hospital and Claire had to take inventory - he is a little doll. WE LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH - PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!
