November 15, 1981 Little Rock, Ark.
Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie, Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barbara Jean and Roy,
It is sort of a cold, overcast kind of day and it's fun to be inside where it is nice and warm and especially nice to have Daddy home with us - I look back on those many years of having him gone all day Sundays and most Saturdays on church business and I'm happy they're behind us!!!!
Annie - what a wonderful letter and those darling Halloween pictures!!!! Where in the world did you get those wigs and the sweat shirts and shorts to match for all four of you? I thought Johnny would die laughing and I had a really hard time convincing Daddy that the picture of Jessie was really her - I hope you are saving all your costumes so they can be recycled - I always wanted to be the mother of a child who won a Halloween costume contest but I never was - your costumes would win first place in the Cotillion contests here. The picture of little Susanna in her birthday outfit really surprised us - she has grown so much and won't be able to wear that very long - she is so cute and little Jessie is growing up too. We surely hope you haven't had too hard a time with all the children this week - Jeannie says you have said everything was going fine.
Roy - it was a wonderful to talk to you the other night and hear a little about your work in the hospital - it sounds like you are really into things and we're happy you enjoy it. Christmas will be so much fun with you and Patrice with us - we can hardly wait to meet her and if there is anything she can't eat or doesn't like (besides tuna) I hope you'll let us know. I hope our weather will be nice so you can take her boating. Daddy had a chance to sell our skiing boat for $1,500 and that is only $500 less than we paid for it about twelve years ago and is a good deal but we have decided to not sell it and take it out to Utah with us next Summer - we could never buy another one that good for that price and Daddy has rebuilt the whole thing so he knows where all the kinks are!!!!
We celebrated Bob's birthday last night - they came over for dinner and then we played - would you believe it - bridge!!!!! Claire doesn't know a diamond from a spade so it was a little slow but we really had fun and before we knew it, it was 11:30 p.m. Their little Michael just eats and sleeps when they get him home. Needless to say, we were all a little sleepy for church this morning - in fact, we didn't wake up until 8:20 and it starts at 9:00 so we were late. The Bishop has asked us to sponsor a church scripture study course and the first meeting will be at our home the Friday after Thanks giving - this morning they announced that it would start next Friday so we may have some come, a week early.
Daddy goes back to Dr. Griffin tomorrow - his hearing isn't any better - in fact, I think it's a little worse and they may have to go back in and do something else if he will let them. He taught most of last week so he feels a little more comfortable in the classroom; he says his ears don't ring like they did at first. He is getting anxious for duck hunting - he and John had their "honkers" turned up the other night - I am hoping it is super good this year.
I am still in my fourth grade class - I had to have conferences with the parents to give them their children's report cards and I spent most of Thursday and Friday at the school. The discipline is improving and it's really a lot of fun. I have to give the Primary
In-service lesson this Tuesday night so I'm constantly preparing - ugh!!!! Grandmother and Grandpa Forrest called last night to tell us that Uncle Bill Smith died (that's Grandpa's sister's husband - Aunt
Lucille) and they live in Ogden. He was nearly 90 so it was expected but I really thought a lot of him - he was so good to me as a child. ------- To save space I won't start a new paragraph. Johnny is doing fine - got his report card and it was good.
I thought I had more space more space on that paper - I shouldn't start a new page because I don't have any more news.
Johnny got an A in geometry and B's in Algebra II, Biology and a C in English - really the worst report card he has ever had and he was quite surprised - I'm sure he'll bring the English grade up. He spent yesterday in Jacksonville at Super Saturday - they had a chili competition. That was hard for him because most of his friends were going to the Boys Club to play basketball - we worry about how long we are going to be able to keep him active and happy in the Seminary activities. He is such a good kid and loves to be with his friends having fun and they do whole some things so we can't quarrel about that - we let him join the Boys Club with the stipulation that he play Church basketball. Daddy has been letting him take the car a lot when he is with one of his friends who has a license - he loves that!!!!!
Daddy's talk to the young adults in the stake last Sunday was so-o-o good - I learned so much. He is really a good teacher and they all love him so much - he could tell them that black was white and they would believe him.
We surely do love each one of you and we hope so much that you're happy and healthy - please let us know if we can do anything for you. Can you believe Thanks giving will soon be here - what are all your plans???? We could all together for dinner at least. The Woolleys will go to Jerome and we know they will enjoy that - we are glad that Mimi is doing better - I'll bet she had fun while she was with you Ann & Roy. PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN THE THINGS YOU DO!!!!
