ROY'S BIRTHDAY

Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie, Ricky & Barbara Jean and Roy,

We have been trying to call you, Roy, in Hawaii to wish you a Happy Birthday and noone answers - Shirley Strauss called about noon today and said she had talked to Trip last night and he said you were there and everything was fine. I called Shirley yesterday to get Trip's phone number and she said she was going to call him anyway and would let us know if you had arrived. What a wonderful experience and we hope you get to see everything and that you will call us when you get back in Providence safe and sound - we'll try again to call you but knowing how you never stay put in one place very long I doubt we'll get you - Shirley said there were four hours difference in the time but I forgot to ask if you are later or earlier so when we called at 1:30 p.m. we thought it would probably be 9:30 there.

It is really raining here today and it's quite cold - I have been praying for a frost to kill the pollen that is causing me so such hay fever but it hasn't been that cold yet. Daddy and John were going home teaching but when they called the people they were to visit they asked them to come another time so Daddy built a fire in the fireplace and we'll all stay home and be comfortable. We got cable television put in yesterday and it is really neat - we got all they had to offer and after we view it for a few months then we'll decide what we want to keep and will drop the others. Bob and Claire came over last night and we watched "Private Benjamin" and "A Coal Miner's Daughter" and part of a John Wayne movie. We really need a new television set so we had it hooked on to the portable one that was in the kitchen and we loved - we had pizza and our "Charlie O" and popcorn and jelly beans and it was better by far than going to the movies.

Bob came over yesterday while we were at Jacksonville with John and his volleyball team (incidentally, they lost their last game by two points) and waited for the cable man to come and while he was here he put in an electrical outlet under the cupboard in the kitchen by the bar where the stools used to be - I am so thrilled with it because we used to have to bring a cord from the others if we wanted an outlet there - it's going to be wonderful. Little Michael is growing like a weed and is so cute - smiles and talks all the time.

John went to the Razorback vs. Houston game last night here in Little Rock - we got beat 20-17. He is on the go constantly - Hall and their homecoming on Friday and he spent most of last week working on floats for the parade and getting ready for the game and dance - the girls he took home (we don't call it a late because it is a school function) is a gymnast and her sister Debra Pope won Homecoming Queen (John's friend's name is Beth Pope). He is loving school and is doing good - happier than he was ever been in school here. He is enjoying "Young Life" very much but it is really active in church activities too.

Grandpa Forrest had a bilateral hernia operation last Thursday - I called and talked to Mother a few minutes ago and she said he is doing fine and will come home tomorrow. He had it done in the Brigham City Hospital. Mother says he gets confused about things occasionally like he has a telephone in his room and can hear it ringing but doesn't know he is supposed to answer it - at 85 plus I guess it's understandable!!

Charlie Beyer had an ulcer operation last week - he has had a bleeding ulcer for quite awhile and they finally had to operate - he is doing good now but had planned to go to Utah for his convention and now he won't be able to go. Brother Feather stone (a General Authority) was here touring the mission and gave a talk to the Stake members on Friday night - he was just excellent. The Hot Springs put on two special musical numbers that Charles had a big part in so we really missed him.

I'm still in my fourth grade class - they want me to teach reading at Forest Heights starting Nov. 4th but I won't be able to because of this class and I'm disappointed about that. They are putting on a Halloween program Tuesday night and I have to go help - there is so much more involved in a class than in a reading lab and I like reading much better. Daddy taught at Parkview several days last week and seemed to enjoy it a little anyway!!!!

There isn't any more news. It was so fun to wish Susanna a Happy Birthday yesterday - she was still excited from her party - that must have been a real success. Rick - we surely hope you're home and back in the swing of things. We love you all very much. Ron - we surely hope Mimi makes a quick and complete recovery from her pneumonia. PLEASE BE CAREFUL IN ALL YOU DO!!
