Sept. 27, 1981 Little Rock, Ark.
Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie, Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barbara Jean and Roy
I had to check the calendar to make sure it was really September - we are having July weather - really hot and humid and there isn't anything nice I can say about it!!!!
Annie - we were so thrilled to receive your letter and the picture Susanna had drawn. Your trip sounds so much fun and we hope like you do that Jennie is up to it - it will be so much fun for the kids and something they will always remember and knowing the Weinerts I'm sure they are up to it - we, selfishly, wish we were close enough to help out and we will be some day. Susanna, I have your picture on our refrigerator and really love it - we're glad you are talking about grandparents in your class.
Johnny is taking typing and just came up and wants to type a sentence or two - so here comes Johnny!!!!!
I'm taking typing this year and my teacher gets on to me about looking at my fingers but it doesn't help. I can type 12 words/minute not looking and thirty looking so I figure I am better off looking.
Ann - that picture at that Susanna drew was cute it's up on the frig. How's Jessie/? Jean how are Ricky and Barb. Jean they are so cute?
Mom wants me to tell you that I got a new pair of pants, and wore them to church today. They are (32-30) in other words I am fat!!!!! Yesterday the church had their volleyball round robins and the first ward did pretty good we won one and lost one 50%?
I ordered a new stereo Fri.. from a discount place in Illinois (really cheap0 Roy I guess you can have your old one of back now it still works pretty good. Roy Mrs. Bopperfuss can be a real pain I don't think I am doing to good in there. WELL HERE'S MOM!!!!!
He is really good kid and such a joy to have around - his idea of something cheap and our idea of something "cheap" are two different ideas. We'll be happy when it gets here so he can get his mind on school work - he's doing though.
We came home from church this noon and all of us got in the kitchen to make enchiladas - Bob and Claire and Michael are going to come over and help us eat them. It is really wonderful having Daddy home with us on Sundays and an extra bonus to have family like Bob and Claire to spend the day with. Bob starts a new rotation tomorrow - this one will be Psychiatry. He will have much better hours and he is looking forward to that - no night work. They had Marilyn and Dean Harris over for dinner last night - Bob is so good for Dean because he is quite inactive. Claire is happy to have her New York trip over with.
Chris and Wayne Smith are up for two weeks - they will spend part of the time with their parents in Plainview. Daddy is going to Plainview with Wayne tomorrow and I believe they are going to cut wood - Wayne has his pickup truck here and will let Daddy use it. I guess their trip home from Arkansas was really something - they got on many wrong roads and Chris says she has never been more frightened - dirt roads that climbed cliffs!!!! Daddy and Wayne went fishing Friday out at Maumelle but they didn't catch anything - that lake is dead!!!
I taught school all last week but at different schools - they called and asked me to apply for a full time job at Wilson in the second grade - I thought about it and decided to wait for something in reading. I have a hard time disciplining the primary grades - maybe it wouldn't be so bad if I had my own class but substituting is really hard in those younger grades. I was at Terry last Friday and two little kids in my class got in a fight and a little black girl scratched a little white boys face and he looked like he had been hit by a truck and they were third graders - it happened so fast that I couldn't get to them in time to percent it. in a second grade class in another school the principal came in first thing in the morning and gave me the names of two children and said, "No matter what they do don't discipline them in any way - their parents have be up to the school and have warned us not to". I couldn't believe it and both of the kids should have been paddled several time s during the day. I'm too old to pamper parents like that. Daddy went to Forest Heights one day but the said he couldn't hear who was saying what - with a lot of background noise he says he feels like he is in barrel. He is going to wait until at least November to try it again. Jim is going to come over this next week for a meeting and will check Daddy them - Daddy says it is improving each day so we're hopeful.
I don't know why I'm starting another page - there really isn't any news.
We had a letter from Mr. Hinton telling us the IRS has accepted our tax as he sent it in and we were relieved about that - he still won't close the probate and give us our deeds for the canyon land until Don pays him what he owes him. We think that is really quite stranger since we have paid everything. He said that the property Don is
planning to sell will probably be sold soon - we hope so. Annie - did you ever get any tomatoes??? We are wondering what shape the yard is in without any sprinkling water - I don't know if that is such a good idea to turn that off or not - it is saving us about $25 monthly so I guess it is.
Girls - did you go the Women's broadcast last night. I just about forgot to go but really enjoyed it. It was the first time I have heard that kind of talk from Bro.
Ezra Taft Benson - with President Kimball's health failing even more it looks like they are getting Benson ready to take over. This new consolidated meeting scheduled really makes one rely more on individual strength especially out here - I don't have any contact with the sisters in the ward except for the one meeting a month and then for just a short time because of the mini class lessons and I really miss it and I'm sure others do too. Those members of the church in Utah and other places in the West mingle with other members in their daily lives but it isn't that way here as your know. I have been teaching a Primary class for a year now (except for the time I was in Utah this Summer) and they told me this morning they are going to release me and have me be the
In-service Leader in Primary - that is just one lesson a month finished once a week so it will be a lot easier.
Roy - how are things going???? We can just imagine how pretty it is in new England now. Pete Hipps left this week with a friend to go on a Fall tour of the New England States - Rhode Island wasn't included on the tour but I'm sure she'll get close to it. We hope you have time to go places where the trees are turning and the colors are so beautiful. We think about you every day and hope everything is going just great - it seems like every day someone asks about you - you surely do have a lot of friends in Arkansas. I taught one day with your former teacher Mrs. Foster and she said she would never forget the day you brought your Daddy organic chemistry book to class to show her something - this was fourth grade - I don't remember that but maybe you do.
I wish I had more news - we're all doing really good - Daddy and I walk two miles every night and that is going up hills in Leawood - we're looking forward to having cooler weather and then maybe we'll increase it. We surely hope you are all taking good care of yourselves and eating good and getting enough exercise and not drinking too many colas and especially Ann and Jean - those diet colas drinks. If we can help you in any way - please let us know - we have no idea of your needs if you don't tell us. We surely are proud of each one of you and want the very best for you.
