Sept. 20, 1981 Little Rock, Ark.
Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie, Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barbara Jean and Roy,
We are having the most beautiful Fall weather - really cool at night and warm and sunny in the afternoons. It is typical football weather and the Razorbacks are doing good so far - they won their game last night 38-7 or something like that - it's really funny but how the razorbacks do determine the mood of the entire community.
Daddy is doing really good and hasn't had any dizziness which is the thing they worry about - he went over to hot Springs on Wednesday and Jim removed some of the dressing and said it was healing great. He has to look at it again in another week and then at the end of October they will give him another hearing test to see if it has improved.
Claire was in New York all last week and we had little Michael some - he is such a doll and so good - just eats, sleeps and smile all days long. she came home on Friday and was really happy to see that he got along good without her. Bob has some long hours at the hospital - he has delivered some babies on his own - he really loves what he is doing - I don't think he gets enough sleep but I guess he will survive.
Johnny is "in" the stereo buying business - he wants a new stereo system that will play the cassette tapes. Daddy and I have spent a lot of time with him going to the Radio Shack and Audio World - actually we thought we would be able to talk him out of it but that's hopeless - he wants to spend the money he earned this summer as a down payment and then get the rest on a time payment plan. Daddy has agreed to let him do that so now he is trying to decide on which kind to get - for those of you who understand the "system" he doesn't want one that is all together - he wants the receiver, then the stereo and cassette player and the speakers - you save quite a bit if you buy from the catalogues so that is what he's going to do. I had no idea there were so many different kinds - our Bishop's son is in that business so he is trying to guide him a little. Your old one Roy is in excellent condition - we had to have something fixed on it but now it works great but he's at the age where he has to have the kind he wants and all his friends have the ones with the cassette tape deck. We can hardly wait until he is sixteen and gets a job so his energies will be used in that direction. He is doing great in school and says geometry and algebra II are fun - he dislikes English and P.E. but likes everything else and he LOVES Hall!!!!
Our Ward had a "Family Preparedness Fair" last Friday night and they asked me to demonstrate sprouting seeds - I decided that would be an appropriate time to wear my Calvin Klein jeans so I did and you can't imaging the attraction I caused. I really felt comfortable in them but noone had ever seen me in jeans before and everyone commented (some good and some not so good) and this morning as I went into the church Dick Cobb said that if his wife weren't Relief Society President she would have worn hers - Ha!!!! I'm anxious for the opportunity to wear them again - I love them.
Rick - we hope you had a happy birthday - we're surely proud of you and the recognition given by you by your company this month. It's really fun to talk to little Susanna and Ricky on the phone - it won't be long until we will want to call and just talk to them - I hung up the phone when Susanna called to talk to Daddy because it's easier for him to hear with just one phone off the hook but he loved it - he felt bad that the missed your call Jean. Ann & Ron - when do you go on your California trip? That will be so much fun and we wish we were closer to help with the children - Susanna and Ricky will have a ball and I hope Jean and Rick will be able to keep up with them - Barji and Jessie won't get too far!!!!
Roy - Leo Aday showed some films this morning in Jr. Primary of you and Shawn climbing pinnacle and rappelling off the cliffs - his theme was physical fitness. I couldn't see your faces but he kept referring to you - I wanted to see them up closer but didn't get to. We surely hope you're enjoying your schooling - Mother and Daddy called the other night and I asked them what kind of leukemia Lela had and they said it was lymphatic - she had the first radiation treatment for it at the University of California in Berkeley and her doctor was Dr. Schelm - that must be depressing for you to work with children who have that!!!!!
There isn't any more news - we surely do love each one of you and hope you're doing good. We wish we could all look forward to being together for part of the Christmas holidays again some time we hope we can. PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!!!Return to Home Page
