August 30, 1981 - Little Rock

Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna, & Jessie, Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barji and Roy,

Well - we're back in the swing of things and even though we're sweltering, it's good to be home. We left Ann and Ron's home about two o'clock on Monday afternoon and we arrived in Little Rock Wednesday morning about 11 so it was a long trip and Johnny and I vowed we mix would never again travel with so much food in the car - we had enough snacking food to last several months and them we stopped and bought a bushel each of tomatoes and peaches. We had to keep them inside the car because it was so hot and every time we turned a corner they turned upside down and by the time we got here, we had tomato and peach juice all over the back seat of the Toyota. We also walked the dogs each time we stopped for gas so that took a lot of extra time too. We spent the first night sleeping under the stars on Rabbit Ears pass in Colorado and that was gorgeous and we about froze to death. We drove all night the next night because we wanted to come through the really hot and muggy area before afternoon. Everything was just wonderful here at home - our yard looks just like it did when we left - Bob did a great job and he' glad to have us home so he doesn't have to worry about it. Hans and Ludie were good travelers and that Ludie is really one beautiful dog - Daddy trimmed him again and brushed out all his snarls and he could be a "show dog" - we have decided that if we were to trade one of them off a female it would have to be Hans and since that's the case we're going to keep both of them - they are so content in the backyard and Hans especial loves having a friend - we keep thinking about Lucie and know she must be lonesome. We feel that you made the right decision and we hope you feel okay about it by now Ron.

We have been busy going to parties since we got home - Marilyn Yant and Billy Haygood had their wedding reception at Trapnall Hall last night and it was an elegant affair - they will be a happy and successful couple - Billy is going to finish his schooling at Fayetteville. Today we went to the Mission Home for a reception for Cynthia Douglas who is going to Hawaii on a mission and tonight we went to an ice cream and cake party at the Woods so we could see the pictures of Dana's wedding - she had a beautiful wedding and really looked pretty. I fixed up that Homemaking Bulletin loose leaf for her from your girls - she won't use it for a while but if she will use it she will really enjoy it.

Johnny starts at Hall in the morning and he is really apprehensive - most of his friends started at Catholic High this week and he feels a little forlorn. We are keeping our fingers crossed that he'll find friends quick, he is doubling up in math and I'm so happy that Daddy will be able to help him. They have closed the campus at Hall this year for the first time since they opened it when you were there Roy - there has really been a lot of criticism about the "open campus" but Johnny is really disappointed - there are too many immature students who can't cope with so many liberties so they're going to keep a tighter control on thing. Ronnie Caveness is going to be on the first string football team at Catholic this year so it will be fun to watch that. Ronnie and John and Derek Jones have spent this week celebrating Johnny's homecoming and Lynn let them take the fishing boat out on Maumelle by themselves yesterday - they had a ball but didn't catch any fish. The day we got home John went to the sporting good's store and bought Daddy a graphite pole and he had "holed up" in his bedroom making it into a nice rod for him - I thought it was for Christmas but he couldn't wait and gave it to him tonight - I'm just hoping Johnny will be able to take his mind off fishing long enough to do some studying.

Our new Mission President and his wife are really nice - they are really different form the Jones family - they have one seventeen year old daughter who is an excellent organist and she has played while the Littlefield's have been gone and she is really good. They say they like it here but them what else could they say!!!

Roy - I bombed out on my letter last week - for one thing I couldn't find the address you said you had left here. I'll and this to your old Box number until we get another one. We were so happy you called last Sunday - I really worry about you when we don't here. We know you are super busy, Bob seems to be a lot more relaxed this year than he has before - he says the hours are long but it's easier. He is in OB GYN this rotation and I asked him if he thought he could deliver a baby and he said emphatically "NO!!!". He and Claire and little Michael came over for dinner today and we enjoyed it so much - wish we could all be together for dinner every Sunday. Ann & Jean - thank you so much for all you did to make our Summer so wonderful - we really miss you all - in fact, I can't think about Ricky, Suz, Jessie and Barji without wanting to cry. WE LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH - PLEASE BE CAREFUL!!!
