Nov. 2, 1980 - Little Rock, Arkansas
Dearest Ron, Ann, Susanna & Jessie,
Rick, Jean, Ricky & Barbara Jean,
and Roy,
Well - Conference week-end is over and we can relax fro another year - we have a General Authority once a year and it really is a big deal!!!! Daddy picked Bro. Eskridge (sp ?) up at 9:30 yesterday morning and then went back up at 1:00 to get Bro. Pinegar - then today he took Bro. Pinegar to the airport at 1:00 and Bro. Eskridge at 5:00 - he said he felt like a chauffer. We had a big dinner planned for today after the meetings and then
Bro. Pinegar's flight was changed - I can never have things work out for them. Bro. Eskridge was here for it though and it was really fun - Bob and Claire came over and helped so much - we had, the McChesneys, the Beyers, (also Steve and Aillene and their friend Frank, a new convert), Pres. & Sister Jones, a couple from
Eldorado whose names I can't remember - there were 18 in all plus four children. I cooked two large briskets and barbecued one and made gravy for the other one, we had ham, that seven layer salad, fruit salad, yams and apples, twice baked potatoes,
broccoli, slush punch and chocolate pudding ice box dessert. Everyone really ate and ate. Daddy did a wonderful job with the conference - he always is by far the best speaker - he is glad it's over.
Ron - we have thought about you all day - still can't believe what happened. (Annie called this morning to tell us that Ron had been beaten up while he was in New Orleans.) Maybe it was a blessing in disguise to help all of us realize what a dangerous country we live in and how important it is for us to never go anyplace alone and to be aware that these things really do happen. I worry about Claire when she goes to New York - she goes to plays by herself and even walks the streets alone - hopefully she doesn't go out at night. We surely hope you heal completely - inside and outside and we're so happy they didn't break anything. We know you are enjoying your work - it sounds wonderful and we're thrilled for you. We can hardly wait for the mail tomorrow because we hope to get the pictures of Jessie and Susanna in their Halloween costumes.
Jeannie and Rick - it was fun to talk to you yesterday and hear about little
Ricky's Halloween costume - Johnny laughed and laughed about him carrying around candy bars in his little hands not knowing what was inside of them. We hope you got some pheasants Rick. We're so proud of your new calling - Elder's Quorum President - what a job but you will be so good and you will receive so many wonderful blessings - they really know a good man and we know you'll do a great job.
Roy - we received a postcard yesterday with an election thing on it and it was signed sincerely, Roy. At first I thought you had taken my
advice to write just a postcard until I looked a little closer and noticed it was from Roy Millard. I talked to Mrs. Hardy in the grocery store the other night and she said that your friend Elizabeth is teaching four year olds in a Day Care Center and will start work on her Master's Degree. She is in Redding, California living where her brother and sister live. I sorta' looked for Robert this weekend but he didn't come to see us if he came home. We surely hope school is coming along good - we're pulling for you.
This dumb typewriter - it is so frustrating - they said they would fix it if we brought it down but we haven't had time yet.
John went to the first Cotillion of the season last night - he didn't get home until after midnight and I was worried but he really had a good time. He is in a carpool this year and it is a lot more fun for him. Daddy and John and I are going up North this Wednesday and take our sleeping bags - they will hunt squirrels and fish and I will just relax - it's AEA and we have Thursday and Friday off.
Ralph is home but he really isn't doing very well - they have given him strong pain pills and he sleeps most of the time - Pete is completely worn out and looks bad.
(written by hand from here to end) Would
you believe I wrote another page and put the carbon in backwards - I'm so
tired I can't do anything right!!
There isn't any more news - we're excited about
the elections.
We love you all so very much - please be
careful in everything you do!!
