June 2, 1979 Saturday
Dearest Ron, Ann & Susanna, Rick and Jean,
It's Saturday evening and we just called Grandpa Forrest - today is his 83rd birthday. He's doing fine and said he had had a Happy Birthday - a lot of his friends have come by to see him - he and grandmother were sitting out on their lawn and he said it was a beautiful day. That is quite a contrast to our weather - we have had rainy, cold weather for the past week - it wouldn't be so bad expect that Roy's friend from New York has been here and they haven't been able to do all the things they wanted to. Bob went with them on Monday and they went to Lake DeGray and did some water skiing but it started to rain and we had an electric storm so they came home. Tuesday it was still raining so they just went around town - Wednesday they went to DeGray again - this time Tripp Strauss went with them and they had pretty good weather for a few hours - Thursday they went to Fayetteville and they stayed there until this afternoon - it was too stormy to do any camping or "rappelling" so they come home early - they did go through the caves at Blanchard Springs and Ty enjoyed that. He is such a nice person - we really like him - he's going back home tomorrow. Roy told us tonight that he and Jill have decided to break up - she is going to stay in Fayetteville for Summer School and I guess she is dating a lot - we are really happy about it but it is really hard on Roy - we have gone through this before and I'm sure it's for the best but right now it seems like the end of the world to him.
We are so happy you have a fun camping trip last week-end - it's too bad the weather was so cold. It seems to me that the weather all over the country is changing - we have never had such a cold Spring - the only other time we can remember it being this cold is when your friend Neil came Jeannie - I guess we're not supposed to have company in the Spring. We'd love to go camping with you when we come out - did you do any fishing? We can just see little Susanna going all over strapped to Ron's back - I'll bet she had a ball. Ann felt so bad about your car getting scratched Jean and Rick - we hope it can be fixed. We're so glad that you are still getting along okay Jeannie - that's really great - Grandpa said you really look good and Ann says so too.
Our Stake Relief Society Feminine Fair was held today and WHAT A JOB!!!! I have been working on that for the past two weeks and I had a very small part on it. It has become so elaborate that it is very hard for many people. We made two hundred little pin cushions that were cross stitched with R.S. 1979 on them - I had to use a magnifying glass to do my share. I was in charge of the sad for the luncheon - we made tuna macaroni sad - I went to the Stake Center yesterday morning about 10 and got home after 6 - I have never cut up so much celery, onion, lettuce and pimiento in my life- it was just delicious though - we also had melon and cantaloupe balls in the watermelon shells and the tables looked so pretty. We had about two hundred come in spite of the rainy weather!!!! We had the luncheon, a fashion show, then the Visiting Teaching Convention and then we separated into our departments - Daddy came over and gave a talk at the Visiting Teaching Convention and he did such a good job - he always does. Now we have to start worrying about the Regional Meetings for June 23rd - we won't serve lunch or anything for that though so it won't be too hard.
Johnny left yesterday afternoon about 5 to go on a Boy Scout Camp Out - they got rained out and came home early this afternoon - he was supposed to stay until tonight. He is in his sleeping bag, curled up in front of the television sound asleep and he's been there for about three hours - he must have been chilled and he got warm and is really zonked out. He is through school for the Summer and he is really happy about that - he and his Daddy can go fishing every day now.
Bob and Claire are doing fine - I believe she is enjoying her work more now. They were invited over to Marilyn and Dean Harris' for dinner tonight - I'm anxious to hear about Marilyn's home - we have heard it was really something but we haven't been in it. Claire is up to her ears in the roadshow and tomorrow is Bob's first Sunday as President of the Sunday School - I hope everything goes okay. Someone called here the other night and asked for Sister Mellor - after I talked to them for a few minutes I realized it was Claire they wanted - I have been the only one for a long time.
Marge Stewart looked just darling today - she isn't wearing her wig anymore and has had her hair cut really short and has lost about 150 pounds and she is so different. Sherry is expecting a baby and they're very happy about that. Bessis Wilhite was there also and she looks good - Farmer has to have help twenty-four hours a day so she is really tied down. Sharon Brown Jones was there with her two little babies - her little boy is about two and her little baby girl is about three months - really darling children. Clairee Nance was there but I didn't get to talk to her - I don't hear much about Janie any more but their Donald is engaged to the Horn girl - do you remember Barbara and Thad Horn - they used to live here and now they live in Layton - I don't know where in Layton but we should look them up when we are Jeannie and Ricks the next time.
I'm going to finish tomorrow - maybe I'll think of more news!!!!
John and I just came home from Fast Meeting - we have those meetings back to back and it's so nice because it really gives us a long evening at home. Claire wore a new dress she has been working on and it's really cute - she has had her hair cut short in a wedge type style and she looks so smart. Bob gave the lesson in the Gospel Doctrine class and he does a wonderful job - we are constantly surprised at his wealth of knowledge - the class is full to overflowing now and before it has barely been full. John bore his testimony for the first time - Bob is such a good influence on him.
Roy left about 11:30 to take Ty to Memphis where he will take a plane to New York. Roy was still sad this morning - oh, dear, this is going to be a long, long summer - I wish he could find a darling girl in the church - we're on the lookout! Maybe he'll come to Utah with us in August now so you be on the lookout too. He'd kill me if he read this letter.
Daddy is in involved in Stake Meetings all day today - I am so happy he doesn't have to go to work in the morning. He had planted zoysia grass all over in our front and back yards and has really worked hard. He takes one of his Real Estate tests this next week and then the final one on June 14th, - he has enjoyed that class so much and says he has learned so many things he didn't know.
Johnny will be thirteen years old next Wednesday - that is really hard for me to believe. He wants so many camping things for his birthday and we told him he had to choose one thing - he is such an outdoorsman!!!! I would like to have a party for him but he doesn't really want one - I may just send a cake over to his Scout Meeting that night.
Aunt Marvel is doing just fine - when I went to see her yesterday she was just the same as she was ten years ago expect that it is very difficult for her to talk - it is with great effort and then she just "hollers". I told her it was Grandpa Forrest's 83rd birthday and she said - "I hope he lives 200 hundred years" - that surprised me!!!!
I can't think of any more news - all I have done is keep my nose in a Relief Society book for the past week or so - I wish I had more reserve knowledge and ability so I didn't have to work so hard for one little lesson. Cissy and Charles were concerned yesterday because Eileen (Steve's wife) was in the hospital with stomach pains and they were worried that it might be gall bladder trouble - her baby is due in two weeks. I haven't heard from them today but I hope she's okay. They took Marc Jordin to the hospital on Friday with what they thought was a heart attack but they don't think it was now - he's still there under observation.
We surely do love all of you - we miss you so much and wish we could all be together especially right now because you could support Roy so much. We are really looking forward to August when we'll be with you. Please let us know if we can help you in any way and take really good care of yourselves.
