Sunday - April 8, 1979

Dearest Ron, Ann & Susanna, Rick & Jean, Bob & Claire and Roy,

It's Sunday evening and we just finished a delicious steak dinner - it was Fast Meeting so we had Testimony meeting right after Sunday School - Daddy had to go to Hot Springs early this morning and we all ate together about 3:30. John was so hungry he had half the steak eaten raw - I bought a top round steak yesterday and marinated it all day in the marinating sauce in Frances James' cookbook and it was really good - it's like the chateaubriand (sp.?) they serve at the Greenbrier!!!!!

Roy- we were so happy to receive your letter Monday - every time the phone has rung this week I was hoping it would be you saying you were close to Little Rock and on your way home. We could surely understand why you didn't come - it was a little out of your way from Florida but we would have really loved to see you and have your friends come stay in our home. We loved the "Mellor's Auto Parts" bill - did you find out anything about the owners? It would be fun to go into our genealogy and see if we have any long lost relatives in Providence. We really appreciated your sending us the information about the armed forces fellowship programs - that seems like a good deal but it is really important to know what you're getting into before making any commitments. We have heard of some deals where the States will put you through Med. School if you promise to practice in some of the rural areas for a certain period of time after graduation. There have been so many articles about Brown in the Time magazines - I'm sure you have read them - the last one was on how they select their students and it was so interesting and makes us aware of what a good opportunity you have - they said they had almost 12,000 applications this year for the class of 1983. There was also an article on how Playboy went to some of the Ivy League schools and there was a darling picture of a girl from Brown - and you said they were all intellects. We hope you will call us tonight and tell us you are back to school all safe and sound - we have worried about your car making it okay!!!!!

Annie and Ron - we have loved talking to you on the phone Annie and hearing about Ron's part in dealing with the Nuclear accident in Harrisburg, Pa. That is really something - we can just imagine the interest you have had in that Ron. I hope I have this right - they have built a simulated project at Billings to try to come up with some solutions to the problems they were having in Pennsylvania. We hope you will tell us more about it. You know we have a big Nuclear Plant in Russellville and one of our High councilman - Walt Horn - is in charge of it. We're surely hoping this scare won't bring about the end of these plants. We're surely proud of you Ron - it's great having someone in the family who knows what is going on. We think it's wonderful for you to have a "Cousins Party" too Ann - Granny Mellor would be so proud of you and we are too - we hope they could all come. I guess it's my old age but I think it would really be fun to start coming out for the family reunions.

Jeannie and Rick - Annie said you were doing finer and that's really wonderful. We'll really be interested in hearing about E. F. Hutton going into the Stock Exchange in Ogden - surely there will be a lot more interest in the stock exchange in the near future - it's great having you in that business Rick so you can tell us where to invest our millions - Ha! Are you still planning your trip to New York - be sure to tell us soon enough so we can make our plans - for those of you who don't know - Rick has to go to New York and Jeannie may go with him and if we can we're going to arrange our time to go there then too and meet them and all go on up to see Roy - we hope it works out. Daddy has to be in Kansas City on May 5th so we need to work around that - either on our way up or on our way back. Be really careful Jeannie and don't overdue!!!!!!

Claire and Bob - it won't be long now and we can hardly wait. Daddy really appreciated your sending him the clippings about Conference - Wow - they really emphasized the importance of retired couples going on Missions - we're so happy they won't call couples who have small children because we're not ready to go on a mission yet - sometime we would really like to. There are a lot of things to rent and a lot of places to buy but we really think it would be best for you to look around first so plan to stay with us for a little while anyway.

We have the Dead Sea Scroll Lecture last night and it was just excellent - there were about 560 there and everyone loved it. Marvin Greene was there with his fiancé and she is cute and will be so good for him - they are going to be married on June 9th in the Idaho Falls Temple. Bob Tiney is also going to be married but I haven't met his fiancé - she is from North Little Rock.

Daddy had a good time in Florida - he was gone all week and I think every officer in the Stake called him - 'course having him gone all the previous week contributed to that. There were all kinds of problems and I was so glad when he got home. I'm also glad that he is going to be home most of the time from now on - be really needs a personal secretary. Johnny was supposed to go on a Boy Scout Camporee at Burns Park Friday night and Saturday - he had been invited to a school party for Friday night and really put up a fuss about the camporee - we finally let him make his own decision since Daddy wasn't here and he chose the school party - I guess he isn't old enough to make his own decisions about that sort of thing. Daddy is Scout Chairman for our Ward so we didn't make too big a hit!!!!

Wayne and Chris Smith are back and Chris looks just fabulous - she has lost at least fifty pounds since you all saw her and she is so pretty and young looking. Wayne is inspecting dams for the Summer and he still doesn't know where they are going to live they are with Linda and Ken now.

We had the most beautiful weather yesterday but today it is really storming - we are in a tornado alert and also thunder storms and they are predicating hail the size of golf balls (I'm sure that's an exaggeration). We are all ready for Summer - I don't believe anyone will dare to complain of the heat - we have all been so cold!!!!!

We called the Forrests on Friday night and they seem to be doing fine - Mother said she had stopped talking the pills and was feeling much better - she had been to Relief Society and had been to have her hair done so that's a good sign. They told us they were afraid they had lost all their rose bushes this past Winter - I surely hope not because they really had some prizes ones.

I made Aunt Marvel five new dresses this week - I call them dresses but they really are very simple gowns!!!! She was really pleased with them - one morning I went over about 10 and they put her in her wheel chair and I took her outside and all around the rest home and up and down Brookside Drive and then it was time for lunch so I had them fix her a place in the dinning room and I stayed and helped her eat lunch - she was so happy and really just like she used to be. She eats so good and sleeps so good - I'm sure she'll be here for a long, long time. Daddy just came home from taking her some bananas and he said she was fine.

Cissy and Charles Beyers were over last Thursday afternoon and we had a good visit - I think I will really enjoy working with her in Relief Society - I'm going to be her Education Counselor. It will mean a lot of traveling throughout the Stakes visiting Relief Societies but most of the time I'll be able to go with daddy and it will be good for John to go with us some... Gayle Wing has had this position and she has been called us Stake Primary President - Ann Cobb is going to be her 1st Counselor and Shawna Beyers her 2nd Counselor. We have a strong stake family!!!!

John Robert came over one day last week to see if I would give him some names of some of our church friends so he could send them cards announcing the practice of his dental work - he said he was sending out 1,000 cards. His equipment should be here in a few weeks and he is really anxious to start working. David is in Hope, Ark. Staying with Roy Jr. and Betty for a couple months - he is working with a physician there on some kind of a medical program.

I can't think of anymore news. Johnny's little puppies are really growing and will be ready to sell in about three more weeks - Daddy said he had to sell them before he could buy his moped so he's taking good care of them. We surely do love each one of you - we're so very proud of you - you just can't imagine how proud!!!!

Please let us know if you need anything.
