Dearest Ron, Ann & Susanna, & Rick and Jean,
I am writing letter on Saturday because Daddy and John have gone fishing and Sunday are just too busy. It is a typically beautiful Spring day in Little Rock and very welcome - we have had two of the coldest and stormiest months I can ever remember here - we had sever weather yesterday and flash flood warnings all during the night but it has cleared up and it so pretty. Johnny checked the weather radio all morning to see if it would be sunny so they could go - they went out for a little while last night but it started to rain so they came home. Daddy bought some little seats for his fishing boat and it makes it so much more comfortable - he is so thrilled that you're anxious to go too Bob.
I have thought about Jill all morning (she left about 8:30 with Robert, Tim and Dan to go see Roy). I hope she had some clear weather because it was really cloudy here when she left - she was so excited and we were excited for her - it was her first flight. I can't imagine anything more fun then to go see New York with friends and she told us you had lots of things planned. Dan was so nice to call last night too. I think I understand it right that you're going to stay in New York with Ty's family for several nights and go see some plays and then to Providence and from there to Yale to see Rick and Trip and maybe Annapolis to see Ted - what fun!!!! We hope so much that you really enjoy everything and have wonderful time but please be rally careful.
I looked for a letter from Annie in the mailbox on Monday and found one from Jeannie - it was great - you sound so busy but happy. When Dan called last night he asked if there was anything I wanted him to tell Roy and I said, "Tell him Jeannie is going to have a baby in August" - I have been so excited about it, I really said that before I realized what I had said so if you still wanted it to be a secret, I'm sorry!!! We think about you all the time and hope everything will continue to go fine - just don't overdue!!!! I loved your letter telling us about having chill with Ellen Mae and Mel - that is such a darling family and they think the world of you. I'm also happy you get to play the organ occasionally I imagine it would really be hard since you don't get to practice very often. We are really thrilled to hear about Rick participating in Stake firesides - he would be so effective and that is such an important thing to do - do you get to go to the temple often.?
I loved talking to you on the phone Annie - don't worry when you don't have time to write - really I just love letters but I really do understand when you don't write - I remember so well that that was the hardest thing I did in our early marriage (or late marriage for that matter). I hope so much that Susanna is sleeping through the night by now - you even sounded tired over the phone - it would be very, very difficult to keep up the schedule you do. Daddy and I laughed and laughed about what Ron said when your tried to spoon feed her cereal - it was more difficult that his Ph.D. thesis!!!! Do you remember the "plunger" we used with John? I thought that was the most important invention of this century but evidently there was something wrong with it because they don't use them anymore. All my "young mother" friends have the happiest and healthiest babies and they are all breast fed so I'm all for it as long as you can possibly do it.
Bob - we really loved your letter too. I have answered the phone twice this week and had Real Estate people telling me you had contacted them - one of the ladies lives right up here on Nob View and she was so excited when she found out we lived in Leawood. My garden club friend, Margie Sims, called to get your address so she could write to you - she's the one who has shown us some homes you might be interested in. we have told the mall that you were going to live with us for awhile - okay!!!! Your new chapel there sounds nice - I wish Aunt Marvel could see it. David celled this afternoon to see if Johnny could go climb Pinnacle with him and I forgot to ask him about that apartment - I'm sure I'll see him before long and I'll ask him. I did get his dormitory phone number - 666-1687. We have surely heard about a lot of young man who didn't get in Med School here who thought they would - Dan Watson said he had two friends from Fayetteville with 3.9 grade point averages who didn't get in -I have to keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming. We're so happy you will be able to take some time off when we come out the end of March and we hope you won't worry about having to study a lot Claire -we'll surely understand!!!!
You Utah kids really sounded as if you were having fun last night - we could almost taste the steaks. Roy - they all got together at Jean and Rick's home to celebrate Bobs getting into Med. School. We didn't get to visit very long with Rick or with Bob or Ron but Claire, Jean and Ann told us all the news. We can't believe that Uncle Glen is finally making a good living - Shirley deserves it thought and we're happy for them. We had a sweet card and note from Aunt Carol and she sent us a picture of Jim and Kaylene's baby girl (Any). She mentioned that Granny and Grandpa Mellor have had 4 great grandchildren born recently - Susanna, Paula's baby boy Jeffery, Mary Ann's baby Peter and Jim's baby girl Any. Our family is growing!!!!
Our World Relief Society is planning for our Birthday Celebration on March 16th. We always give some kind of a gift so we decided to get a silk flower arrangement for the piano in the chapel. Linda Smithers has access to a wholesale flower shop - Vestals in North Little Rock - so a group of us went over there and bought $175.00 worth of beautiful silk flowers. We came over here after and made the arrangement - actually Liz Tolman, our Bishop's wife made it - and then we all bought the extra flowers. We made an arrangement for our living room and it's really pretty. The flowers were so much cheaper if we bought them by the dozen that's why we bought so many.
Our little neighbor, Chip Godvin, passed away last Wednesday morning - they had his funeral on Thursday afternoon and Daddy and I went. It was held in the First United Methodist Church - the one where Jeannie Hazper and Betsy Luten were both married. I thought of you Annie in your beautiful bridesmaid dress for Janice's wedding - you looked so pretty that night but you were so unhappy with Janice. We're glad that Chip didn't have to suffer any longer - his mother Susanna looked terrible -she and her former husband, Chip's father, at with their daughter Christie between them and my heart ached to thing of unhappiness in their lives and when we first knew them they were such a happy family.
Daddy and John and I went to see "The Sound of Music" live at the Robinson Auditorium. It was done very well - a New York Company - but John just about wiggled a hole in his seat - if we get any culture in him it will be a miracle. He just wants to hunt and fish but he does very well in school so we don't complain. He had a friend spend the night with him and he is in second place in Tennis in the State - Derek Jones - a really nice boy.
We decided to get out of the Houston Trade Exchange Business - the man who was to run it in Houston was having a hard time getting it to do well and felt they would have to put a lot more money into it in order for it to be a success - evidently it was very difficult to hire people to work in it because there are so many jobs available in Houston. They met together and decided it was too risky to put any more money into it so they dissolved.
We thin Daisy might be going to have puppies - we're just hopping they'll be schnauzers. We didn't take her to be bred this time - we decided to see if it would happen naturally and Daddy was sure it didn't. we're still not sure but she looks that way.
Mother sent us the copies of the News Journals with Dee's picture in them - he was awarded the "Silver Beaver" award for his work with the Scouting program. That really is an honor and we're proud of him. They have made Daddy (Lynn) chairman of the Scouting program in our Ward - he said he would like to do that to help John - we just don't have the leaders here we need for that program.
I have spent a lot of time with Aunt Marvel this past week - they have moved her to another room and when I asked why they told me that the woman she was in the room with kept putting water on her to keep her from hollering so they put her in a room with another bedfast woman. She seems happy and really eats good.
John has his Easter Ball tonight in Cotillion - he's in the exhibition dance and we're invited to go but I don't thin we will. He has really enjoyed that.
I can't think of any more news - we surely do miss each one of you and hope you're happy and that you will be very careful in everything you do. Marilyn Harris's husband Dean had a brother, Marrill Harris, who was killed in an automobile accident in Ogden this past week - the auto accidents worry us so much. WE LOVE YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!!
