Dearest Ann & Ron, Jean & Rick and Bob,
Roy called us last night and he said he was going to leave early this morning and wanted to get to North Carolina tonight - he plans to spend a couple days with Robert and then come home - he'll probably be here Wednesday sometime. He said his finals went fine. They called from the VA Hospital one day last week to tell him he could have job there if he wanted it - we called him and when we finally convinced him that we hadn't gone to intercede in his behalf he called to accept it. He doesn't start work until June 12th so he'll have a week to rest.
Bob - we loved the pictures of the tuxedos - I'm looking for a pale blue dress and so far I haven't found one but I'm sure I will. It will be a beautiful wedding reception - I'm a little worried about not having many people come - I guess if we don't expect many to come we won't be disappointed. We had the nicest letter from Claire - she sounds as if she's having a great time and really seeing a lot of Europe - we were so thrilled she wrote to us. She should be coming back soon, shouldn't she?
Jeannie & Rick - how's the house going? I'm glad you're not building one here - we have had so much rain lately that everything has slowed down. We hope everything is going wonderful for you and that you're both happy in your jobs. Jeannie - I have never heard of that program for the
Merry Miss girls - you keep so busy with your Primary job and that's so good for the girls in your class but a lot of work for you. Whenever I see the young women in our area so busy in their positions I think of you and we're really happy you have that desire. I a.m. convinced the young people such as our children are more talented and stronger than our generation was, by far!!!!
Annie & Ron - it was fun to talk to you - I was worried because you have been good to write. I was sure you had gone to Los Angeles and stayed an extra week - Ha!! We know how happy you must be Ann to have school out - it will be so much fun to just stay home and relax and sew and you deserve it. Your little puppy is so cute - Daddy groomed him yesterday and that's the smallest dog I have every seen to be groomed - she's just darling but her ears are as big as she is - I didn't realize their ears were that big - Daddy has made an appointment with our Vet to have her ears trimmed on June 5th - he does such an excellent collars for two weeks and it's quite gross!!!! Johnny just loves her - we have sold all the others and I'm glad to be through with them but he misses them.
Daddy is in Memphis today - he left early this morning to go there for a meeting with Bro. Low and the Memphis Stake Presidency. Johnny and I just went the Western Sizzler for dinner - I am so mad at myself, I went on a diet this morning and was so sure that all I would eat would be a salad and then I get there and order everything he did - even sour cream and butter on my baked potatoes - I'll have to start again tomorrow because I must lose 10 lbs. before I'll come for the wedding. We're going to go to the Second Ward for Sacrament meeting because they are going to have Court of Honor for the Scouts after their meeting and Johnny will get three merit badges and he advanced to a Second Class Scout (I think that's right.
We were invited to the Second Ward dinner Friday night to be judges of their desserts - they had another couple judge the main dish - we tasted thirteen desserts before dinner - they were all delicious but we finally chose a fruit pie and it turned out that Connie Bass had made it - Jerry Bohn won the second place for a pie he had made. After their dinner they showed the movie "Swill Family Robinson" - we had a lot of fun.
Johnny did a Democrat Paper Route for his friend Carter Brown this morning - I waked up at three o'clock to make sure his alarm would go off at four. He went to get his papers and could only find one bundle - he wrapped them and threw those and we called the Democrat to tell them he only had one bundle - finally about 7 a.m. the man came and said his other bundle was on Linda and Gillette Carter had forgotten to tell him they would be in two places - needless to say we're both sleepy.
CONGRATULATIONS BOB - we're so thrilled you have been accepted into the Podiatry School in San Francisco - that is just wonderful and you will love it there. I'm anxious to hear how Claire feels about it. We can hardly wait to come and be with you and visit more about the school and just everything - we know you must be relieved to sorta' have your plans made for the next year or so. I would love to come to San Francisco and see you - I haven't been there for a long time. Do they have student housing and that sort of thing or will you have to look for an apartment before you get there to live?
I had a very short note from Grandmother and she has consented to going to Mayo Clinic. I sent her application in along with the forms from her doctors so now we'll have to wait for an appointment. She must really feel weak most of the time and I know something is wrong and I hope so much they'll be able to find out what it is. Grandpa will celebrate is 82nd birthday this coming Friday - June 2nd - if you have time after getting this letter to send him a card I know he would really appreciate it. Aunt Marvel is doing very well - they see to it that she gets her medicine when she's supposed to have it and she has calmed down a lot - the other nurses wouldn't stay with her until she swallowed it and she would throw it on the floor after they left her. The woman in the room next to her is 96 years old and has been in the Nursing Home for about ten years - I surely hope Aunt Marvel doesn't live that long.
We had our annual BYU lecture here on Thursday night - it was a Mrs. Cannon - I can't think of her first name - she was a very good speaker but I felt it was more entertaining than informative. I asked her if she knew Joanne Doxey and she said, "I helped her grow up!!!!!
Johnny's baseball team isn't doing very well - in fact, to show you what kind of a team they have - he is the best player they have!!!! Their games really get long - many of the boys on his team haven't played very much and they don't know what to do - in their game last Thursday the other team had the bases loaded and the batter hit one right to second base, the second baseman got it and threw it home without getting the runner on second out and he over three and two runners came in. Johnny's enjoying it thought and that's all that matters.
Tomorrow is Memorial Day - someday, I hope to be able to go to Brigham city for that day. That was always the biggest community get together when I was a child - Lela and I would always have new dresses for that - not for Easter, but always for Memorial Day and we would spend the biggest part of the day at the cemetery and Daddy would always play "taps" on his bugle. I haven't been there for it for thirty years so I'm sure it has changed. Johnny has to go to school tomorrow but I think Daddy has a holiday.
The Richards are really anxious to go home - in fact they are all packed - Daddy said if any of the other missionaries were that "trunky" they'd get sent home dishonorably and fast. Mary sat by me in Sunday School this morning and she has to use my scriptures because she said hers were packed - she told me that Stephanie is working at Utah Valley Bob. She plans to take some more courses so she can get her RN - now she has here LPN. The Richards leave here on the day you get married Bob - June 28th - I really don't blame them for wanting to leave, three years is a long time.
Jim and Carol Brown - the young couple who have moved here from Jerome, Idaho, - have bought a home next to Catherine Collins. I sat by Catherine this morning and she is so thrilled about it - the first time in her life she has had anyone active in the church live by her. He has his missionary work out for him but I'm sure he'll be a success. Ron - did we ever tell you that the Kenworthys sent a message to us by pres. Richards who was over there when they made that district into a stake - they were impressed with them.
I can't think of any more news. Johnny is in the bathroom cleaning out his fishing gear - he and Daddy went to Maumelle yesterday and caught I bass - they were there all morning - but he's not discouraged - he's in there dragging the lures through the bath water to see how they wiggle in front of the fish. Daddy is so thrilled to have him for a fishing partner!!!!
We love each one of you so very much and we are so anxious to come for the wedding. As soon as I get your letter answering me about who do invite to your marriage and the dinner afterwards Bob, I'll send some little invitations and have them to RSVP to you - okay?????
